I have a hubcap that looks like a 31 or 32 style but instead of the bowtie it has a chevron in the middle. The ring and emblem were black also. Can anyone ID or know the history of these caps?

I saw that style on a friend's 31 Chevy a few years ago. We figured they were aftermarket replacements.

Those would be after market hub caps (not made by GM). That prevented who ever made them from using the Chevrolet logo. Some had just straight bars. Up through 1948 there were several companies making replacement hub caps for popular cars. Just think, for some years there were over 4 million hub caps running around for just ones years production of Chevrolets so the replacement market was thriving. Chevrolet used the same hub cap from 1941-1948 so there probably over 10 million hub caps that could get lost or damaged. The original GM hub caps had a brass shell over a steel back. The shell was chrome plated. With this arangement they resisted rust. The replacement hub caps were just chrome plated steel and would rust the first winter. In 1940 the genuine Chevrolet hub cap for a 1932 sold for 65 cents. Thats was about two hours pay for most workers.

There was an article in the G&D recently on early hubcaps. It gave the explanation for the bar rather that a Chevrolet bowtie. Your profile does not indicate you are a member of the VCCA. If you are interested in joining or just discuss the pros and cons, send me a PM.

seems to be the same as with old VW hubcaps. Remember from my childhood, there were lots of old vw beetles having hubcaps with an "X" in the middle instead of the VW-sign. Decades later I found out there was a company "Quelle" having VW hubcaps in their catalogue but it was forbidden to use the vw trademark sign, so the put a big X on it. had an old split window VW-bus for 25 years (sold it 2008) and my bus had one X-hubcap and 3 vw caps. seems to be the same as you did ask for. An aftermarket part. Stefan from germany

I have a set of them as you describe and they were made in Argentina. Not a bad looking cap and they are much better than no cap at all. With a little paint they would be good "50 footers".

The caps I have are also made in Argenta and appear to be very old. They are not in great shape and I will have to replace them at some point.
