I am still learning about the vintage Chevy's and recently inherited a 1928 Coupe. The engine hand crank has turned up missing. Does anyone have a photo of the correct one? My Father-In-Law liked to show people how easily the car started with the crank! I don't know if I want to go that far, but I would like to have on since the car is being restored.
Thanks, Jeff

Thanks Shawng,
A picture would be great. The hand crank on Ebay does not appear to have the correct end for the one-way crankshaft coupling. I thought maybe the hand crank just needs some form of a pin on the drive end.

Hi Jeff,
Yes like you, when I restored my 28 over 30 years ago, I wanted a crank, and it has been under the seat since, having never seen the light of day. I only keep for dire emergencies or to threaten the car with in the event she does not start.
Regards
Ray

I would suggest that the picture of the crank is correct. The angle does not let us see the pin through the crank at the end.

The engine crank that Ken linked us to on Ebay isn't correct for a 1928 Chevrolet Passenger car. The scale provided in the picture would indicate that the length of the main shaft is approximately 11 to 12 inches. I measured my '28 crank handle and the main shaft length is approximately 15 inches long. I also measured the approximate distance from the front face on my radiator core to the crankshaft pully which turned out to be about 11 inches. The sheet metal sleeve handle is correct.

Guys and Gals
ask the ebay guy the measurements
my 27 is 15 inches total and 9 inches on long run into pulley. I have 2 the one I use has a lug wrench on handle end. The diameter of one is 5/8 and the other 3/4 they both fit the 3/4 is snug. I have an extra but its probably to short as the 28 apparently requires a longer crank. Think I will put my extra on ebay for 29 bucks also.
I use my crank for fun lots of people ask to see. Ken

Hello Oldie,
Thanks for your information and you make a good point: I also measured the approximate distance from the front face on my radiator core to the crankshaft pully which turned out to be about 11 inches.
I will do the same tonight, it sounds like the crank on Ebay is a little too short !
Jeff

The starting crank is 18 1/2" overall length. Beginning in late 20s they had a rotating sleeve on the end of the crank end held on by intentions in the sleeve into a groove in the end of the crank. Before that they were just a 3/4" diameter rod with 2-90 deg. bends and a 3/8" dia. pin in the end. I have reproduced several of them in the past.

Thanks everyone!
For the record I measured the distance from the outside of the radiator core to the crankshaft nut for the crank. It is right at 9". So... the crank for sale on Ebay is abit short, but there will be more for sale.
Chipper- You gave me all the information I need to make a crank if I cannot locate an original.
Shawng- I reviewed your photo but I could not log on for a better look. I am a new VCCA member so I sent an email for help.
Thanks again,
Jeff

A 28 crank handle is longer than a 27 as it has to go through the shroud the reach the pulley, I'd say from memory about 6" longer Chris

Hi Ken, The hand crank went for $50.00 plus a $15.00 shipping charge. That is more that I wanted to pay, at least for now. Plenty more out there...

my '27 has an original crank. Would it be the same? The original 1927 crank won't work on the 1928. The radiator was set out longer for the 28, some gurus say because the 28 was designed for the new six cylinder engine but for some reason the six was not ready for the 1928 year model car.
