I'm in the process of disassembling a 1930 3-speed transmission. I cannot remove the speedometer gear. The shop manual (p.75) states: "The speedometer driven gear should be removed before the rear half of the yoke is removed and installed after it has been assembled to eliminate stripping the teeth off of the drive and driven gear." I have sprayed Kroil into the cavity of the speedometer gear and let this penetrating oil soak a few hours. It made no difference. I tried a large tap wrench on the speedometer gear shaft, and gave it a steady pull while turning the universal joint in either direction. No luck. What am I missing? Anyone have a trick that they have used to break loose the speedometer gear? Thanks for your help.

It will require a large socket to remove the gear. There is a blind fitting on the opposite end of the place the speedo cable is attached. Use a socket to remove that end. The speedo end also requires a large socket. Remove the fitting and then extract the speedo gear. The driving gear is on the U-joint and usually is neither damaged nor worn.

Ray, Thanks for your reply and your good advice. I didn't see the hex-head cap on the right side of the universal housing because it was covered with grease and dirt. I found my 7/8 inch socket, and I had the speedometer gear out in 2 minutes. And your were right---the speedometer gear and the driving gear are in perfect shape. Thanks again for your help.
