Did Chevrolet offer Chevrolets painted Gold in 1962 in celebration of their 50th year? If so, could anyone buy one? Was there anything special about these cars?

Thanks Junkyard Dog for the information on Golden 62 Chevies. I have an email from a VCCA member who wants to bring his gold color 62 Chevy to Flint for our 50th Anniversary Meet which is only 14 months away.

David... I was hoping that you were asking the question because your plan was to raffle one at the Flint meet. Do they still raffle a car off for the big meets? Maybe we could get Dads31 to donate his!!

In 1962 Anniversary Gold was just another color and available on the Impalas only. Chevrolet didn't even have an anniversary to celebrate in 1962.
1961 would have been their 50th year just like 2011 is their 100th year.

Chevrolet did have an anniversary to celebrate in 1962. The 1962 CHEVROLET STORY wrote Chevrolet built 2,999 cars in 1912. Durant merged the Little and Chevrolet companies and moved the Chevrolet company to Flint in 1913.
1961 was their 50th year just like 2011 will be their 100th company year while 2012 is the 100 car year.

The one in the photo you posted looks like Autumn Gold, not Anniversary Gold. Look at the cowl tag. Gene the 50th Anniversary is mentioned on many 62 publications and sales lit.

In 1962 Anniversary gold was just a standard production color unlike the "special" and limited number of 1955's painted gold for GM's 50th anniversary.
What is it the 50th anniversary of? I know they mention it in the Chevrolet Story.
Will they have another 100th anniversary for this event in 2012?...or even mention it?

You must have seen one of the key chains that also mention the 50th Anniversary of Chevrolet, that image is plastered on many publications even on the back Engineering Features, If you have a copy you might want to look on page 62 of that publication it where it clearly states,

Anniversary Gold **

** - Used in limited quantity for sport coupe only

It is dated September of 1961, maybe you have something printed on a later date that states otherwise. I did look further and to see if I had anything to contradict the engineering features book and I found neat mailer (printed 9-61) with a ermine white sport coupe on the cover with a slogan "A favorite then (sketch of a touring car) and A favorite now" also showing the same artwork of the key chain saying "thank-you America for 50 years of Confidence" I also found the gold colored cover of the 1912 parts book printed in 1962. Now both the Finger tip facts and the Chevrolet Color brochure do not make mention of the Anniversary Gold Color, however the color is shown in the Ditzler book. The part of the story I always debated is the number claimed to be produced, anyone can say that there were only so many made but there is no way to authenticate that number. If there is that paper would have been printed or refered to somewhere. I do know that color has a desired taste and the "gold" interior really is yellow and it is far from attractive.
1958 also used the color Anniversary Gold to mark the 50th Anniversary of GM

It's interesting that you found something that states "sport coupe only". I believe the 927 (gold) paint code first appeared in Nov publications. Regarding the "sport coupe only" reference, that must have changed, because I have documented a few convertibles which were legit 927 cars. I guess when Chevy changed their mind, either nothing made it into print or it just hasn't surfaced yet.

There was a discussion about this on Chevy Talk a few years back. Owners reported as having Impalas of all body styles and most pictured their cars.?????????
From my memory I remember seeing body styles other than sport coupes in that color when they were new.

In my opinion Chevrolet somehow missed the boat by not having the 50th Anniversary in 1961 and came up with a "reason" to have it in 1962. Now I can't wait to see what they do in 2012.

I will mail you the same copies I mailed to Gene last week. The November date makes sence you will see that after you read a letter from the President of Chevrolet to the brand loyal customers in September.
If I owned one of these cars you mentioned knowing there is paperwork stating sport coupe only I would be on a mission to find that paperwork to proove it
