Has anyone used a sealed bearing in the water pump to eliminate the need for using packing. Or is there a later water pump that can be converted for use on the 30. Thanks

The "fillingstation" were in the processs of manufacturing a new water pump with a sealed bearing for 1929 to 1934 . I checked the online catalog , but couldn't find it listed. yet. Yes, there was a post in this forum a while back about converting a water pump to sealed bearings. https://vccachat.org/ubbthreads.php/topics/156512/Re_New_water_pump_still_leakin#Post156512

i`m having the same problem. i rebuilt my pump over the winter and it still leaks. i have been rebuilding split case building water pumps for years. the kind that brings water to the buildings roof tank. i know i did it right. 2 pieces of packing, grease ring with hole lined up for grease cup,2 pieces of packing. i`m almost at the end of tighting. i tried every packing i could get my hands on. mine only leaks when its running. i even tried cutting the packing on a angle / and offsetting the cuts. one at 3 o clock. one at 9 o clock and so on. i have a spare pump sitting on my bench i`m trying to find a seal that would fit inside the housing. but the hunt goes on. right now every time i take my car out i jam a rag inside the pump shaft under the nut. its driving me nuts.

There was a replacement waterpump made in the US some years ago which has a sealed bearing. I bought a used one on ebay last year, but i haven't used it yet, so i don't know if it leaks or not, but the bearing still feels good.

Remove your pump and remove the shaft. Tale a look at the area on the shaft where the seal would be located. Ugly, huh? With that rusty spot right at the seal you can't expect to get any service from it. Solution, either rebuild your pump or send it to someone that does.

I've used a square section dreasy hemp packing with good results. It's primarily used in stern propellor shaft packing boxes for small boats, and has a temperature range from about 20 degrees Centigrade up to just over the boiling point of water, around the 130-140 degree Centigrade mark. As it's square in section,it's soft enough to roll out flatter with a piece of dowel, and cut to fit.

Found a NOS water pump with a sealed bearing on eBay. It's called a Permite Water pump and was made by Aluminum Industries, Cincinnati, Ohio. I'll install it this week.

Installed the new water pump, fits perfectly. Put about 150 miles on the car and all is fine. Not original but I have no leaks or spray on the inside of the hood.
