I found two machined holes in my block, each is one inch in diameter. One is at the back under the head and the other is on the left side under the intake manifold. I was advised by a parts vendor that they were for feeze plugs. I bought two cup-shaped metal freeze plugs at NAPA, put some Permatex-2 on them and beat them into the holes with a hammer and a block of wood. My questions:
Are there more than two freeze plug holes?
Did I buy the correct type of freeze plugs?

If you got the cup-shaped plugs to fit, good for you. The originals were dished plugs that were set by flattening the center to force the edges outward. There are only two "freeze" plugs. Actually they "core" plugs used to help remove the sand used to produce the casting. It is a common misconception that they provide any freeze protection. They do not!

Thanks Chipper, I replaced the cup shaped ones with the dish type, and they fit much better; I think they will actually stay in place!

Are you guys talking about Welch plugs? maybe someone can post a picture showing the difference and the ones that hold better.

In Great Britain they are Welch plugs. Here in the States they are core plugs. Wonder what they are called in Russia, China or Brazil?

The plugs are referred to as soft plugs, welsh plugs and freeze plugs by many old timers. Take your pick and call,em what ya want

I never heard them called core plugs, not even when I was in patternmaking and foundry class back at Texas Tech. We did call them Welch plugs, soft plugs, and freeze plugs and in the Marine Corps we called them...them sorry curse leaking curse freeze plugs maybe because that is what our motor pool First Sargent called them! His instructions on installing them was " curse hit'em with a big curse hammer!"
