I have noticed that there is some leakage from my rear axles into the drums. I decided to replace my seals both inside and outside. It looks like I will need to pull the axle to apply the new seals. What is the trick to removing the axle to get to the interior seals? I have never done this before and I hope I am not opening a can of worms or perhaps shaved metal!!!!!!!!!!

once you get the rear hub off (which sometimes can be a bear) there will be a retainer around the axle held in place with 4 bolts. remove the retainer and the axle should pull out with the bearing

Does that require a puller or should it simply pull out? I have pulled the hub and taken the retainer off of the axle to where the bearing is exposed but the axle does not pull out easily yet although I was a bit gun shy.

That is normal. Replace the nut on the end of the axle. Wrap a chain around the axle behind the nut. Make a loop in the end of the chain up close, put a bar through the loop and either by yourself or with help, give it a good solid jerk. If that doesn't get the job done you will need a large slide hammer.

i wrap a piece of chain(about 12' long) around the axle, insert an end of the chain thru a 12" concrete block and secure the chain to itself. grab the concrete block up close to the axle, then toss the block as hard as you can away from the axle. cheap slide hammer. good luck, mike
