My 1924 has a couple clincher style rims on it. Could these be from an earlier model or are they most likely brand x. Thanks, Denny

Find two more just like them and you will be all fixed up. The tires should be 30 X 3.5 clinchers with flaps and tubes.

(To identify Chevrolet rims, check the lug near the tube stem hole, it should be cut out. Them other rims are not cut.)

Ray brings up a very good point on rims for '24 Closed cars.

I know that the 490, '23, and '24 open cars all used clincher rims. The 490 and '23 closed cars used straight side rims. I just looked through the '24 parts book, and it does not truly define which wheels were used on the '24 closed cars - but I assume that the closed cars still used the straight side rims.

Please don't take this for fact, we need to do more research on this.

3window: The 1924 owners manual states on page six; "All cars are equipped with 30 X 3 1/2" wheels & tires. The closed cars use a straight side cord and the open cars a clincher fabric tire." Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help, Looking for new tires I have found there is a better selection of period correct tread patterns on the clincher tires. Although I think the straight side rims look better, VCCA judging may frown using on the wrong rims.

I hope you are not getting confused on the tires for your car. The correct tire for your clincher rims is a 30 X 3 1/2. Coker.com has the Firestone tire in several patterns. They are available in both black and white sidewalls.

Other brands are available, however the most correct is the 30 X 3 1/2 from Coker.

I talked to Coker Tire before I posted about the rims. At that time I thought the 2 clincher rims had to be brand x or from an earlier model Chevy and they only had one 30x3 1/2 to fit the straight side rims. That was an Excelsior tire that I dont think the tread design looks period correct. I checked my owners manual and just like Steve says the closed car used the straight side rims but I will have to use clincher rims to use the Firestones.

But you have clincher rims and the only tire is the 30 X 3 1/2. To use the balloon tires you need a split rim.

So what do you have for rims?

Most interesting. I did not know Chevs had straight sided rims until late 1925. My early '25 has beaded edge still(30 x3 1/2 clinchers) But then we had naff all sedans here, can't say I've ever seen one so early.
If you have straight sided rims (low pressure balloon tyres) then they may well have come off a Willys Overland 91, who were well in front of Chev to supply balloon tyres (here anyway). Willys used Hayes wheels also, and the rims and fellies were identical to the Chev and interchange. The earlier Willys clincher rims interchange with the straight sided and likewise with the Chev. The straight sided tyre size was 4.40x 23. I think all you will get now is a 5.00x23, perhaps a bit wide for a Chev, but they looked fine on the Willys which were a beefier car anyway.
Therefore, if you have a choice I would go for the straight sided balloon tyre every time. Beaded edge tyres are a dog in every sense. At high pressure (necessary to hold them on the rim) your car will ride like a dray full of bricks and be highly skittish over bumps, accompanied with lousy braking. I have driven both the '25 series with the different tyres and you would not believe the difference. My beaded edge car is a flapping bag of shaking bolts compared to the balloon tyred car. It was a quantum leap forward in design and safety. And a heavy timber framed sedan body is further reason to use balloon tyres. Interestingly the cheaper Overlands were using lighter all-steel bodies by this time, and all were equipped with balloon tyres.
Cheers,
Geoff.

Did you intend to write 23?
