I want to remove the distributor from my engine to clean it. The thing has about as much oil inside it as the rocker arm area....

Nothing in the books I have say anything about removing and reinstalling the distributor. Will I run into any hidden "no-nos"? It looks like a rather straight foreward job. Loosen the clamp bolt and pull it straight out after first noting the position of the rotor.

Hi Bob.
It is alway a good idea to rotate the engine around to top dead centre on the Number one cylinder, that way everything is referenced before you remove the distibutor.

Mark the position of the rotor on the dissy housing before removing as you have stated, and also as the distributor is withdrawn from the block, note how it twists the rotor, and mark this second position of the rotor.
When you reinstall the dissy, line up the second mark, and as you push the dissy back into the block it will rotate back to the original position.

Taking a picture of the position of the rotor before you start is also a help.

That should work as long as you don't rotate the crankshaft.

Thanks Chip.

Do you live here? You are always Johnny (Chip) on the spot.

Thanks again, I really appreciate the help.
