I've noticed this on the 235s also. Only logical reason is to provide additional ventilation to the top part of the engine.

Your engine has a draft tube and the vents allow air to enter and be drawn out the draft tube.

The 1954 valve cover is the only one of the "four screw" covers to have slots. The 1955 and up had a breathing mesh oil filler cap

This may solve another problem I have with my 54. I get a lot of blow by from the vent tube and really messes up my undercarrage and garage floor. The car has an aftermarket chrome valve cover with no vents. Could thisbe causing the blow by from the tube. The engine is newly rebuilt and has only 3,500 miles. Does not use oil just get a mess from the tube. May look for a breathable cap that fits

It may be allowing pressure to build up in the engine,,,find a 1955-62 6 cyl breather type cap. If it continues to have that much blow-by it indicates the compression rings are not sealing. May take another 10,000 miles of driving to seat them in.
