Hello there! I've decided to go "original" on my motor and drive-train and need to find a reputable shop that can do my engine rebuild - the original 216 is missing some of the lifters, but i've got the "bulk" of it intact - any advice? I've heard that you can "improve" the oiling system in this thing - and still keep it looking "original" on the outside. Here's what she looks like at this point... Thanks! ![[Linked Image from i333.photobucket.com]](http://i333.photobucket.com/albums/m399/actordoc/1939%20Chevy%20Truck/DSC02152.jpg)

Angus, I am pleased you have decided to go original. Well done. As to a reputable shop, I'm sure that you will receive many recommendations for your area. Any auto machine shop can do the job. They may have to send off the rods for re-babbitt to oversize, turn the crank, etc. It will run you between 1500-2000 bucks.
On the other hand, you could do a minor overhaul by honing the cylinders, taking out a shim or two from the mains and rods, if tolerances suggest it, put in new standard rings, grind the valves with a hand grinder and paste, put in a new standard oil pump and gasket set. Let us know what you need in parts and maybe we can help supply you the parts at a reasonable cost. I know that I will.
With this overhaul you will be able to put many a mile on that sucker and not worry about it. Those old stove bolt sixes were plenty tough. Best, Charlie
BTW: If you decide to do it yourself, I have rings, valves, gaskets, valve guides, etc. Send a list of what you need.

They may have to send off the rods for re-babbitt to oversize If the crank is turned, making the journals smaller in diameter, then I believe that the babbitt on the rods would be poured to undersize instead of oversize since the diameter of the bearing surface on each rod would also be smaller to match the smaller journals on the crank.

thanks folks - the whole thing seems a bit daunting - i've never done that sort of work before - it all sounds so "simple" yet not so much :)
i'll do some more research and "schoolin'" myself perhaps it would be a good project to learn on!

I don't have anybody local to your location in WA but I do have someone here in S. WI that did my 216 and I could not be happier. I had to do the final assembly but they did all the machining work, set the crank, rods and pistons and I then reassembled it (with help from the forum and Gene S).
If you strike out in your area and end up shipping it, let me know and I can get you contact info.

Hi Angus,
Just wanted to let you know that our meeting is tonight (April 6) and hopefully will see you there. Don't know where you are in Vancouver but I'm just off of Lieser Road.
Ray and I know of a really good shop which can help you with the engine.
Also don't forget about the Portland Swap Meet this weekend. It is the largest Swap meet this side of the Mississippi.
