I'm just getting ready to bead blast and repaint the air cleaner on a '65 Impala 283. Which paint is correct: Gloss black or satin black? (or flat black???) willy

Thanks in advance for the help.

Chip,
I am pretty sure that is painted semi gloss , 60 % . i think.

That goes for most black brackets and things like the radiator
fan , heater box and fan power steering pump, etc etc.

Hey Chip.

I think at the factory the air cleaners where dip coated and then baked in an oven, that produces the hard semi gloss finish.
The process is called electrophoretic deposition. and is used in mass production.

That is why they go for the 60% gloss, as it it the closest you can get to the OEM finsh.

Regards,

Hi Gene,
I dont think that a gloss black paint from the 1960's is the same as a gloss paint using modern acrylic urethane enamels, which have a 90% finished gloss after baking at 60 deg celcius.

I think paint technology has come a long way in the last 50 years.
A modern sprayed gloss will not reproduce the same finish as what the factory did.

My recommendation of 60% gloss was based on years of reading restoration articles in US magazines like "Super Chevy" and CHP

Well, it's got two coats of satin black on it now! Good news is that I haven't put the decals on yet. Time to break out the gloss black? Any other views on this? willy togo

Hi Chip,
Jack is correct on the acc brackets with suggesting a 60% range gloss.Gene is correct saying the air cleaner assemblies were more glossy.
Definitely add a thin gloss coat over your 2 satin coats and see how it looks.
I posted a picture in the members photo section of my unrestored 70 Impala engine compartment. The only items that have been repainted are the water pump and radiator.Notice the air cleaner is more glossy, while the alt bracket is an approx 60-70% percent gloss.
Hope this helps,Jim

They also sell this ultra gloss black for air cleaners to look the same as Jim's 1970 Impala.
