I was inspired by a recent posting about starting an engine for the first time.
I removed the oil pan from my engine. everything was extremely clean. The person I bought the car from said the engine was rebuilt. However I noticed that the
oil pump screen was oval shaped. The original was round.
How do I know if this is a gear or vane type pump?
I have an original vane oil pump.
I have read that the gear type pumps are better. What are the pros or cons to installing the original vane pump.
thanks

If it has the oval kidney shapped screen it is a gear type pump.
After about 1039 that is all Chevrolet sold as a replacement for the 1929-1936 engines. Its basically a 1937 oil pump.
These are the advantages Chevrolet listed for the gear type pump.
The gear type pump offers a smoother flow of oil and greater pressure at higher speeds. The gear type pump action or whirling vane and rotating gears is the same. The rolling gears with the large space between them create a suction when they revolve. Where the vane shoves thru the lines two slugs of oil per reveloution, the gears pick-up and discharge fourteen slugs per reveloution. The gear type pump was almost necessary after 1935 when the rods the rods were pressure stream lubricated. + the mains received full pressure. The only part that was lubricated under full pressure in a 1931 was the center main bearing. All other locations were lubricated from the low pressure side of the oiling system.
Is the gear pump really necessary on a 1931. No, but there are no disadvantages of having the gear type pump.
