I'm repainting an air cleaner (1950 oil bath style) and I'm looking for suggestions for AC logo replacement. Although a bit worn, the original orange lettering seems to have been painted/stenciled. Replacement decals I've found are not designed as the original.
Thanks.

I had the same situation on my 54 air cleaner. The AC logo thingy looked pretty darn good. And I hated to sand it off and paint the whole thing and then apply a re-po decal.

So, here's what I did. I got some of that "barely sticks" painter masking tape. (It's often blue in color.) Masked over the original design and carefully painted (rattle can) with a satin/semi-gloss type black paint. If you're lucky, you won't notice any (hardly any) difference between the old paint - in the AC logo area - and the new, fresh paint.

Just to try and reassure you, I've painted the air cleaner on my '54 Bel Air hardtop 5-6 times over around 35 years as described above. And it's worked out just fine (maybe could even say "great") over all these years.

Hope this helps. Altho I'd be willing to defer to a more "professional" suggestion....

Bill.

Thanks for the suggestion, Bill. I'm familiar with the 'blue tape' you used - good to know it's worked for you several times throughout the years.

Happy to help. Another thought, spray on a very light coat and see how it looks. Maybe do a 2nd very light coat.

In other words, don't spray it on too heavy or it's more likely the logo area won't look very good compared to the "new" painted area.

That's a great point. I'll give that a try.
