I'm looking for help identifying what i believe to be an early 350 crate motor. I have searched all the books i can find with no luck. The stamp on the engine pad is. 1M06024VP. Not sure if this number is correct or someone has used a stamp kit on the block. Any information on this engine would be appreciated.

If I read your posting correctly you have listed the serial#. Look for a # cast in probably just above the bellhousing behind the left rear cylinder, this will tell the age and possibly the capacity. Tony

Tony Tony, the number i posted is stamped on the passenger side head pad. I,ve tried to check the casting number with no luck flashlight, mirrors and so on. It's not real important to me as the car runs perfect. Just a want to know kind of thing. If i ever have to pull the motor I'll know for sure. In my mind i think it's a early 1969 350. Anyway thank you very much for your response.

The stamp on the engine pad is.1M06024VP. I found a suffix of HP, a 69 full size, 350 with M/T. no VP

Just received this information from the chevy talk web site. Answers some of my questions but not all. Paul, you do not say what body this engine is in or may have come out of.I show it as a 1969 Chev truck engine(VP code),350-215hp(2bbl) manual- trans.Pretty much a base, low comp engine for a standard pickup of the era. Hope this helps,Jim

The "crate" engines were made in Mexico. That makes sense.

Jim, My only other questions are. 1. does this engine have flat or dome type pistons. 2. is it a 2 or four bolt main bearing engine. 3.what would the cc of the heads (70) (76)? Those are the only remaining things i would like to find out. I always try here first for answers but sometimes they might get over looked. Like you, I think this is the best chevy club in the world. If you could help with these questions it would be greatly apprecaited.......

Thanks Gene, Never though to do a search on crate engines. These specs are not a big deal to me as i bought my 56 bel air around 12 years ago with this engine installed. after all these years and being retired now,I have a yearning to know these things....

Sounds better that its in your 1956. I thought it may have been in your Vette.

No Gene, the vette is 99% stock. The only changes I've made are few chrome dress up things on the engine. It has the 327/300 h.p. but it must be a crate engine also, the head pad has no numbers at all ?

My guess would be if there are no numbers on the pad the block only was replaced at one time. When a block was replaced the numbers from the old block were supposed to be stamped on the new block. I am not sure about crate engines but years ago when we ordered a complete engine it was taken off of the assembly line and was stamped, warehoused as a part, and the numbers were stamped into the pad.

Gene, searched crate engines, crate engines from Mexico and nothing went back that far. Jim, Thank you for your time and your help I now have a general idea of what this engine is. Maybe someday if it breaks i will know for sure, but the way it runs i don't think it will break anytime soon. ( IT'S GOT THE HEART OF A LION )
