I would like to suggest that non-VCCA members be allowed access into technical archive submittal and research. A valuable resource is lost when information is excluded.

I believe my present quest to convert my '36 Chevy 1/2 ton gear ratio from 4.11 to 3.55 is an example. As each potentially project ending obstacle is encountered and resolved, a lot of time and frustration is avoided for the next person who attempts this conversion. Why prevent it from being published?

iagree
what good is Chatter II as a recruiting tool if we give away all of the valuable info to non-members. Join up and enjoy the perks! ...After all it only cost as much for a year's membership as taking your sweetie out for a steak dinner!

Chevy Chatter is not a free site for the VCCA to operate. We encourage alot of people, both VCCA members and non-members to come and use the site as an aid in your restoration or your enjoyment of Chevrolets. The VCCA has a marvelous magazine that is full of color pictures, free advertising to members, etc. We call the monthly VCCA magazine the Generator and Distributor or G&D for short.
I agree with the decision to limit non-members to certain areas on this chat site. Otherwise, I too would just save my money and not join the VCCA and gain the benefits. I hope that you will consider joining the club. It is truely a great place to be.

What you want is one of the values of being a VCCA member......join the group and that "valuable resource' is not lost...it's yours!!

Get the wax out of your ears!! I am not looking for "The milk", I'm the cow trying to contribute some milk. I'm doing a gear ratio swap in my '36 1/2 ton that everyone who I ever met in 40+ years of VCCA membeship told me couldn't be done. I'm making great progress on it and I want to tell others what the problems were and how they were solved.

Does that sound like wanting a freebe?

I'll say it again. I was a VCCA member for over 40 years and finally gave up on it. Unlike VCCA Chat, VCCA is purely a social club with no emphasis on the real gearheads. Look at my article in the May 2009 G & D for an example of what used to fill the G & D in the 60s and early 70s. The degree of detail in my article makes it stick out like a sore thumb today.

In the "old days" the guys who really did good stuff with Chevy restorations were like the guys who run cars on the dry lakes of the California desert and the Bonneville salt flats today. They had some tricks up their sleeves and those who wanted to could learn a lot from them.

Most of today's VCCA members write a bunch of checks and call themselves "Restorers". The exceptions to that are on this forum. Those are the guys who hunger for information no matter who contributes it.

I challenge my critics to look at a forum called 1936 Chevy Owners. It's full of tech information. There is no membership requirement and no dues. All it takes to participate is to want to. That's where I got the tip on how to approach the rear gear ratio swap in my '36 1/2 ton. The moderator of that forum has asked me to take a lot of pictures of the gear change project then write a "How to" article.

Is that so hard for you "Members only" guys to understand?

Ray, I think that we understand what you are saying, we just choose to disagree that a non-member of VCCA should have access to enjoy the perks of VCCA membership without being a member of VCCA.

Ray... Another option is to post a link to the '36 site that shows your pictures, then we can all see it.

Thank you for the note Brewster. I'm planning on doing exactly what you suggest. The moderator of 1936 Chevy Owners as well as several of the members have already said they're interested in duplicating my project after I work out the bugs.

If I were to do this project again it would only take a fraction of the time.

I'm prowling VCCA Chat looking for somebody who might have a '37-'39 driveshaft to use in my gear ratio conversion. The '37 rear end that I bought from a VCCA member has severe rust damage in the seal and bushing area despite assurances given to me that it was removed in perfect condition from a running car and thereafter kept in dry storage.

Although I'm an experienced gear head, I have almost zero computer skills. If anyone can suggest other potential sources of that driveshaft, please let me know. Street rodders regard that stuff as scrap iron. They probably have their own online forums.
