1964 283 after removing the grime it has this big red thick crayon x on the side of the block between the motor mount and the front of the block.Any ideas? I am sure this engine was never pulled from the truck.

Pete, I've heard of putting a X on the side of the boat to mark the spot where the fish were biting. Perhaps there is an equally logical reason for the X on your engine. Mike

Ouch!! I don't know if it's acceptable to joke about the venerable 283 like that on this forum. If they had 283 V8 engines in the old West, and you were caught making such remarks, I have no doubt you would have been convicted by a jury of your peers and promptly hanged in the town square.

The crayon marks were put on at the factory. Most I am aware of are inspection marks or verification of an inspection. I would think an X would be a reject but apparently not in this case.
