I have put this chore off as long as possible. I'm wondering what method(s) you might suggest to get the old rubber off the running boards. I'm guessing there is no easy way but I would like to find the one that works the best.
Also, since there is no reproduction rubber for a 34, I'm wondering what you would suggest for the new rubber. Thanks for any replies!

I have just completed the removal of the old mats on my 1928 Convertible Sport Cabriolet. I used a chisel held with a pair of vice-grips and a light hammer. About 1 hour per side. Next step is sand blasting. Then comes the decision, $400.00 + for new mats, then shipping and finally special glue. The option is a non contoured set of mats that you have to figure out a way to bend them over the side and make them stay there. They worked well on my 33 Eagle, but the curve was much more gentle. Don't have much advice on what to replace your mats. Perhaps some generic mats that you would have to engineer to fit.

Youngfalcon-If your boards were anything like my 33 running boards, I simply started using a sharp stiff paint scraper and the old material started popping off a little at a time and then I bead blasted them. I suppose if they are more stubborn you could use the help of a propane torch, outside of course.

Well, I got the old running board rubber off (mis)using a wood chisel and ball peen hammer. It took a good part of an afternoon to get both sides done. I'm sure my old woodworking teacher would have chewed me out on using a wood chisel but it worked well with a resharpen about every 10 minutes.

Anyone know where I can find some running board rubber mat that has ribs running lengthwise? I need it to be 12" wide and will need about 8 feet. I don't want the "textured" style available at The Filling Station. I have given up on finding original reproductions and think the rib design would look the best.

A friend of mine got some material like you describe at Lowes or Home Depot and made his own for his '37.

I'm getting my '34, 4-door Master painted & would like new running boards. I&I reproduction company told me the old man making these quit & took the molds. Steele reproduction can't get any either. So, if you do find any, please let me know. I agree the rib design looks better.
I like the Lowes suggustion.

i too used home depot mats for my 30.
i didn`t think 300$ for repop mats were worth it.
since they were as thin as paper.
i`m glad i seen the repop mats at a swap meet before i ordered them site unseen. i would of upset spending that kind of money on paper thin mats.

The previous owner of my 28 used hardware store ribbed matting and on the edge ran a strip of white oak to hold it down. While the job is below my standards for fit and finish, it looks good. It is not original, but does get compliments.
It's not how fast you can go, but how good you look at 20 MPH.

If your looking for running board mats you can contact Kris at 403-578-4515. He make mats for almost everything. They're not cheap but they're made like Chevrolet did. They're vulcanized with UV coating.....Joe

I ordered some matting from a blue oval brand vendor and installed them back in March. While they are not original, they look great. But thanks for the info.!

Garry Wallace has replacement rubber for running boards, and I think they are about $60 per pair. The profile is generic but to me looks original. This seems to be the inbetween step,with the next being the fully moulded sets at about $400 a pair, which I would buy, but can not justify the cost. Also you may check the filling station.

where are these "blue oval brand vendors"? Never heard of them. do you have a contact number/address?
I did not like the rolls of rubber at HD. Haven't tried Lowe's.

Ray, How is the "DOWN UNDER" THESE DAYS? It's been 10 long years since we were in Melborne. What a wonderful city. Took in the Tennis tourney. Who is Garry Wallace you refer to? I haven't found any decent looking running board rubber for my '34.

I am restoring a 34 Master Sport Sedan. I&I in California has the correct running board mats. As for rubber removal, I used a hand held propate torch and scrapper, followed by sand blasting then bead blasting to smooth the metal. JIM

I installed new running board mats that I purchased from I&I reproductions. They were very well made, fitted perfectly and a reasonable price, even landed in Australia. I documented the complete exercise earlier in the year in this forum. Peter
