Is anyone besides me disgusted with the name calling and arguing going on here lately? I thought we were all like-minded folks here for enjoyment and sharing knowledge. What is the monitor's role in all this? Please warn if you are posting a bitchy post so we can read elsewhere.

I must have missed it. I've seen some tongue-in-cheek ribbing but no serious dustups.

Sometimes the barbs traded are between members who know each other and perhaps should be in a PM.

Sometimes a man has to do what a man has to do. I don't like name calling either...specially if it is me that is being called names. Some times I watch and listen,,,,and sometimes I don't. It'll be ok as long as there aren't any pictures here of nakked ladies. Where do you all go to find that kind of repulsive stuff, anyway? .....Just wanted to know, so that I won't stumble onto one of those kind of places, of course. Show me your old Chevrolet junk!

Dean, Sometimes it is a buddy to buddy rag-on my buddy and sometimes it isn't. In VCCA and on the Chat Forums it is hard to tell. Your intentions and concerns are well meant and thanks for careing.
Many of us think the other guy is a buddy but you never know. As for what I put on here, I get very little of it from a book. I try some crazy things, and sometimes they work. I was 45 years old before I ever saw a Chevrolet shop manual and I have been owning and "fixing" Chevrolets ever since I was a Freshman in highschool (my first was a 34 1/2 ton pickup that I stripped down and called it my Hoopie) I still wear overalls and spin my wrenches, and once in a great while I will bust a knuckle or get a blister from a soldering gun.
If you have something to say...just go ahead and say it!
Sticks and stones ...and all that...

Note the source of this post. It is long-winded. If you can't stomach heart-felt groveling then skip it. Warning: Open at your own risk.
Dean, please let me weigh in here. This mess has been gnawing on me right much ever since your initial post. That's because I feel that I alone am the cause of all the concerns expressed in your post.
First, let me say that it was never my intent to "name-call" or "argue" or come across as knowing everything with anyone or about anything.
Second, it was never my intent to disparage MrMack about his solution for testing bulbs in a parallel hook-up to see which ones produced the best observed candle-power. His excellent solution was something that I would never would have thought to do. I was joking with him about the bulb prongs and the soldering. Although I know how to solder, having learned from my father who was a mechanic and radiator repairman (among other things) for many years. I have boiled, rodded, and soldered the top and bottom tanks and fixed leaks on countless radiators earlier in life. I have never learned, however, to solder with a soldering gun or blow-torch heated sordering iron. Each time I try I make a mess of it. All this is to say I admire someone who can use those latter tools well. My poking fun at MrMack was never intended to challenge his expertise in either use of soldering tools and equipment or his knowledge or inventive nature. The last idea to come in my head was to use a short piece of gas hose to hold the small bolt heads for attaching the electro-lock cable to the underside of the dash. (Works better than a screwdriver, for me.)
Third. Although I may come across as a smart-aleck I am far from it. For example, when I installed my engine in the 41 last summer, I could never get the points to fire. After going through agony and puzzlement for days on end, I finally grounded the distributor to the side pan. Worked. I'm not so proud of that bit of stupidity. Another, revealing and stupid act was not installing a new though-out (clutch release) bearing (TOB) while I had the golden opportunity. After everything was buttoned up the TOB sounded like it was dry as a desert bone. Had to pull the transmission out and put a new TOB in. Not fun. Same engine, the oil connector's discharge pipe was loose. I thought, "oh, it'll be fine." Wrong. Going to readjust the valves 200 miles later, I found that the loose pipe had fell off. The front shaft and parts were badly scored. Had to rob another engine to get good replacement ones. You can see that I ain't too bright and I sure as heck don't knew everything. I really don't know much at all, when you get right down to it.
Fourth, as to me taking the inter-service rivalry too far, I confess that I have. Nonetheless, I have not called a Marine a "Jar-head." I know that they don't like the term and I don't either. I have great respect for all branches of service but it doesn't always show, I suppose. I'm truly sorry about that. I promise to do better.
Fifth, I'm afraid that I have lost a friend in MrMack. In hindsight, I know that I have kidded him far too much. It was not my intent to go too far. I have a large sense of humor that gets me trouble now and then. I apologize and I accept everyone's sanction and counsel.
Sixth, and most important to me. I don't get to mingle with members here. You will notice that although North Carolina lists two chapters, the only active one is over in Statesville. A long trip for me. Because of this distance factor, I don't have the close, personal association that many member may enjoy. Accordingly, I act as if I have a close "buddy" experience whenever I post something on Chatter. That, I suppose, is being too familiar on my part. I apologize. Point here is that I yearn for all the member friends I can get. Alas, however, I'm afraid I have lost some. I want to make the Flint meet but I don't want to show up only to be ostracized, be thought of as a sarcastic smart a--; not welcomed to sit in on social gatherings and when edging my way in on a group of members, only to realized pretty soon that I'm the only one left standing there.
Seventh, as a catch-all; I have gone too far; I have stepped on sensibilities; I have acted and posted improperly and without strict adherence to club rules for use of the forums: I am sorry; I apologize and I hope all that I have offended, although unintentionally, will forgive me. I need to be back in your good graces. Without, friends there's not much to say for social gatherings and events, even on the internet. Especially in a club where the common bond is our love for old Chevrolets. You have my fidelity and respect. I hope can regain or earn yours. I value all of you. You're the best. As like a currant bush that needs constant tending thanks for cutting me back when I need it.
Best wishes, Charlie

Charlie, Do you know the reason the engine started after you grounded the distributor to the side cover?

Charlie... a very noble and humble post to make... often it's hard for people to recognize and take resposibility for their actions and words but it is great to see that you do. That said, I have been reading your posts for some time now, and although often I don't comment on them, I do look forward to reading your writing, as a feel that I know you well enough in an online sort of way to realize that your humour is tongue in cheek. I got a real kick out of your posts on how the '41's are the best year ever made. It was funny because EVERYONE knows that the real Vintage Chevrolet experts already compiled a photo-data base of the best years of Chevrolet and posted it here http://www.vcca.org/As you can see '41's came eleventh! Hence the humour in your post! On a serious note, I too understand your concerns about attending the meet in Flint. Megan and I recently joined the VCCA, and will also be attending, not knowing anyone, and I'm sure the feeling that everyone already knows everyone will be at the fore front of our own fears. That said, I was a member with my parents growing up, so I do know that this group of people will go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome at the meet, and on the tours. It has been 15 years since I last attended a VCCA function, so I also feel a little nervous about this coming summer, but know in the back of my mind that the members of my region will welcome us as friends. I look forward to meeting all of the folks we chat with here, including yourself and MrMack. Who knows, maybe it will be while the judges are going over your car, and MrMack and I can help them out!

Nice post Charlie, I get most of the tongue in cheek stuff going on by you and other folks here, and being relatively new here(only a couple of years) I don't know anyone personally. Certainly nobody here needs me or anyone else to protect their feelings but I feel there are other places to air this stuff. Some posts by others seemed (at least to me) to be out of line. I know we have the option to read or not read anyone's posts, but I want to read about you and your cars, that's all, and learn or help if I can. Thanks for listening. Dean

Gene, about the ground. Well, I think it allowed the circuit to be completed back to the battery. Just guessing.

Hey Charlie, I don't worry about things said and done in fun. I certainly never considered myself to be an expert about anything, except maybe "taking it easy." I do enough of that to at least be considered "experianced"I try to be adequate enough at welding and soldering and hammering to keep my old cars running enough to make the trip and get back home without having to spend money for a tow, or have some costly repairs done by an EXPERT Mechanic. .
Sometimes I do get a bit crossthreaded and need to remember to have fun and not sweat the small stuff.
I remember when I was a kid when we played rough and it looked like that I was about to have pain from the strain we would yell I give up....calf rope! That allowed us to regroup and have another try at whatever game we were playing, without having anger getting out of hand. Sometimes I need to say "Calf Rope!" Don't ask me where the phrase came from, I don't know. Like Ben Franklin said "let's all hang together least ways we hang seperately."
..............Calf Rope!
