This so easy, you'll kick yourself for not having figured it out on your own. All you have to do to convert that to negative ground is: Disconnect the battery (VERY important first step) Reverse the wires on the coil Reverse the wires on the ammeter Reverse the battery cables. While you're at it, why not switch the ground cable from going to the frame to a starter mounting bolt or the transmission? It's better than the frame. Put all your tools away and sweep the garage floor, because you are DONE. Oh, yeah. Power up the system to see if you did it right. Easy job. By the way, this method works for Fords, too (should you have one laying around).
Another useful info item.

wawuzit,What brought all this on? Are you snowed in over there in Tennessee? Looks like the next one here may bring some more white stuff. The rest of the week may be a good time to sit by the fire and surf the net. Did you just happen to think about it? This happens to me all the time. usually with this dumb computer, I can mess it up with out even trying. Just type in the wrong thing in the wrong place and BLAM! lights out!
Did you buy a F0RD tractor with positive ground, or was it a GMC pickup?
If you have a Petronix module, you might fry it!

Long story...I tried two different LED light bulbs for the brake lights in my 6V 38 chevy. They didn't work at all. The light bulb supplier said there are two different types. Postive ground and Negative ground. My car is a Negative ground. I looked on Google for more information about Chevys that were postive ground and found this information on how to change over. I thought someone might be interested. I gave up on LED bulbs. The halogen bulbs get so hot I thought it might melt the paint because it's in a tight spot. Anyway...just information.. The snow is gone but the nasty weather is here to stay awhile. The first dry day, I'm going to drive my ole car to the glass installers garage. I ready for that now. Happy Motoring !!!

Doesn’t the direction of a DC motor depend on the polarity? Wouldn’t the starter motor turn the wrong direction? What about the generator, any issues with that?

Doesn't that still leave the starter motor turning backwards?

I think that before I went to all the trouble of changing the entire system from negative ground to positive ground just for a couple of new-fangled LED bulbs I would have got the correct bulbs....Did I miss something somewhere along the way?

This google search was because I was curious. I gave up on that vendors bulbs because of grounding issues, but I gave up on all LED bulbs after several vendors said not to expect a huge difference. I wouldn't go to postive ground for sure. I was trying to get a brighter brake light without going to 12Volt.

Just go to a brighter 6V bulb with higher lums with the same socket config. I have found some that will melt your plastic lenses if you leave the brake on or if the BL switch get's stuck on. Wanna ask me how that I know?

I'd have to do some looking, i bought a couple of 6v bulb kits on eBay and they were in those. I bought ones for Chevrolets and also one for Caddies (It had more bulbs for the same price) I rigged up a couple of sockets in parallel and have alligator clips to connect to a battery, that way I can compare bulbs one to the other on either a 6 volt battery or a 12 volt battery. I found out that I can use sockets for either on the tail lights. I have also soldered across a double terminal bulb and used both filiments in a single bulb socket. You can do a lot with a soldering gun and some solder.

MrMack, there you go a-blowing more smoke than that blanket-released by an American Indian Signal Corps Chief standing on a high butte broadcasting an upcoming all-Nations Pow-Wow.
Everybody knows that the lugs for a two element bulb are offset while those for an single element are not. (That was implemented years ago for the Marine Corps so's they wouldn't spend all night trying to change a tail-light bulb on a jeep.)
Soldering iron my butt. Using one and all the solder in a 1930s F--d body shop won't make it so that the spring won't eject the bulb once your fingers let loose of that critter. Come on, did you think no one would catch that glaring error? Do you make your own Christmas tree lights?
I have to hand it you, though. You come up with some good stuff now and then. Almost had some of us there. (Swabbies are still scratching their heads. They know something is amiss with your post but just can't seem to pinpoint what it is. Go figure.) You Ji-rines have to be more clever if you think you're gonna pull the wool over the heads of us'ems dog-faces!
Tell me does Paiute(sp) (or whatever you'all call that there hallucinatory stuff), grow wild out there on that there Texas promenade point or what?

[quote=Tell me does Paiute(sp)[/quote] Charlie, Is this what you wanted to know? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PeyoteBy the way, the flavor of your last message did not taste very good to me. Neither did the unsolicited slam on the Marine Corps. It just did not seem to fit in with the general excelent tone on this site. Rich Sgt., USMC

Rich, yes. That's what I wanted to know.
As to my "slam" on the corps, I apologize. You're right. I'm sorry. Best wishes, Charlie
