Good morning ,
I was curious if there are any other numbers on the chasis other then the plate on the inside the cab, and if not what do these numbers mean ? I have photos of the plate if interested. Also what is the best method for packing the front wheel bearings, is there any need to pack the hub with grease? I have found they are not like the roller bearing and race I was used to.
Thanks
kelr

There are no numbers stamped on the frame.

What are the numbers that you are inquiring about? Can you post them here?

You pack the bearings the same way you do for roller bearings. Do NOT pack the hub with grease, only grease the bearings and a outer race. They are installed in the same manner as roller bearings too. Be sure to check for wear, pits and other damage before repacking. As with rollers each ball (or roller) and race should be visually checked. Also check the cages for wear or damage.

Both the '27 Series LM and '28 Series LO & LP trucks were called "Capital". The all have a steel radiator shell is the same shape as the '27 passenger aluminum one.

I suspect that the Car number is 1 LM 5184 if you look very closely you may find the top and bottom of the "M". That would make it a '27 and not a '28. It was very common for titles to have errors as many states did not issue titles when these vehicles were new. When issued later the "officials" used what ever paperwork was available or the owner told them. Hence the errors.

Where in southern Indiana are you. I have an original paint 28 LO unrestored truck at my house about a half hour south of Terre Haute. You would be welcome to come see it if you need. It still has the original door panels and everything in decent shape.

28 Chevy LO Capitol 1 ton, 28 National 2 dr coach, 71 Chevy Custom Camper 3/4 ton. Also 23 Oldsmobile Economy truck and a 24 Olds sport touring.
