Is there an identification number on a rear end assembly?

Don't want to buy a rear end that won't fit our 1929 4 door.

Tim,
According to the casting numbers data which is in the Tech talk area, 1929 should have a part number of 362 147 , but it doesn't give the casting number.

I am pretty sure that the 1929 has external brakes on the rear, where as 1930 and later had internal brake shoes.
So it should be easy to make sure it is not a 1930 and later rear end.

( I have a several 1930 and several 1931 differential carriers which have casting number 357 388 on all of them which should equate to a 1932 diff carrier, but all are date stamped with 1930 and 1931 dates, and i have measured the 3 different drive shaft lengths to confirm which was which.)

1930 is listed in that chart as part number 362 718 , and 1931 as part number 363 076 , and 1932 casting number as 357 388, and part number as 363714.

Thank you again for the great advice... Jack.. I continue to be amazed at all the facets of this web site. Learning a little more each day.....

Tim

I'm going to try to find a 29 rear end and then sell off or give away the 1930 which doesn't fit.

Thank you again everyone.... I bought a complete rear end assembly with good brake pads on it this afternoon... external brakes.

I don't know what two piece brake band means... couldn't tell.

Looks in good shape and hopefully it will fit.

Help please... I bought a "1929" rear end but I don't want to restore it and install if its not the right one.

It has a casting numer on the side 352297 and it has another number on the oppposite side which is stamped in, not cast 145830. Is this a 1929 for sure? I couln't find thse numbers under the Tech Talk forum.
