I don't see any wires from my voltage regulator going anywhere. Does the 6 volt alternator have a internal regulator? Everything seems to be working great.

Most newer alternators are internally regulated. If your battery is staying up & your external regulator isn't connected it must be.

It's strange because only one wire is coming out of the alt. and everything seems to work! I thought it took two wires at least.

The one wire alt. has a self energizing internal regulator.

My 1937 Chevy (6 volt) generator only has one wire coming out of it, also. But it has a condensor looking part that is mounted on top of it. Could anyone tell me what that is and what it does?

I too have a single wire internally regulated 6V alternator. It has three times the available power as the generator and has been working great.

About 15 months after I bought it, something went wrong with the electronics module and the guy I bought it from sold me a new one for about $12. It took longer to dismount the regulator than it did to install the little electronics module. It has been working fine since then. I asked the guy I bought the module from if all you had to do to convert a 12v alternator to 6v was to replace this module. His answer was "maybe" nothing more specific than that. However, if you have ever been inside an alternator, there is not much there. I did go ahead and buy a spare module just in case. It's cheap. My alternator is a GM 10SI single wire internally regulated. The module was not some backyard project, it was a pro job. If that is all there is to this, someone is making good money on these conversions. Mine did have new bearings and a new pulley when I got it.

Are there any experts out there on this subject? I am curious about if the modification is limited to the electronics module.

Thanks,

Rich

My 6 volt, one wire is a generator, not an alternator. As I do not have a separate voltage regulator, I would assume that my generator also has the built in regulator. Could that be possible?

Sounds like you have a generator with a "cut-out".

I know that this is probably a dumb question, but what exactly does that mean?

The cut out is small rectangular "box" that is usually mounted on the generator. It contains an electromagnet coil that closes a set of points when the generator is charging which connects the generator out put to the battery. When the engine is turned off and the generator stops making electricity the points open and disconnect the generator so that the battery is not run down through the generator. If it is not mounted on the generator it will be somewhere between the generator and the battery on the wire that goes from the battery to the generator. On the old 20 amp generators the only voltage adjustment is a 3rd brush that is manually adjustable. Is the "condenser looking thing" round with a wire coming out of one end of it(as a condenser like in the ignition) or is it rectangular with 2 wires attached to it with screws? If it is the latter it is a cut out.

If it is indeed a condenser, only one wire will exit the device.
