It's been a few years since I started the restoration on my 26 Chev.I was about to put the front fenders on the frame thinking it was a matter of a few nuts and bolts when I decided to look at the pictures that I took when taking it apart.Long story short it appears it was a spring loaded nut and bolt that held the front fenders to the frame. Is this right if so can someone tell if I can buy replacement springs.

Yes, the front fenders are spring loaded. They are mounted with 1/4 20 bolts. Take a bolt and go to a place (hardware store) that has an assortment of springs and select 6 that fit the bolt and are fairly stiff. The only place that uses the springs are the fender connection to the frame.

Hi Ray, I do not remember any springs holding my front fenders on. Where are they located? I had 4 stove bolts that went through the hood hold downs, the fender and through the frame to a frame clip. The other 2 bolts go through the fender support bracket into the frame. Thanks Woodbutcher

Okay, here is the skinny. There are 3 stove bolts (1/4X20) on each side that have springs. There are two on the stiffener at the front and a single on the rear for a total of 6 for both sides. The order of assembly is the stove-bolt is placed down through each of the three holes. On the bottom is placed a very stiff coil spring approximately 1" long. Next is a flat washer then a lock washer and finally the nut. Do not tighten the nut to the point of compressing the spring, however, snug everything up and then stop. This arrangement allows the front of the car to flex and not break the bolts and bolt holes in the fender.

Hi Ray, Mine is a 26 1/2 ton. I have 4 stove bolts that go through the fender and mount to the frame. The front one goes through the front spash apron, fender and then the frame. Does that one get a spring? The next 2 go through the fender, then the stiffner for the hood hold downs then the frame. Do they get springs? The last one is at rear of fender and goes through fender then the frame. Does this one get spring? It was 5 years ago I took this apart, and none of my notes or pictures show springs. At the moment I am ready to install my front fenders. Thanks very much for your help Woodbutcher

Hi Woodbutcher, The one near the cowl and the one with the (triangle)? stiffener with two holes are the ones that get a short strong spring below.

Since the '25 and '26 are so similar, did the '25 have the same set up?

Yes, 1925 & 26 both had the spring mounts for the fender.

Thank you very much,Ray. I found 2 little springs when digging through my parts. They are very tight and about 1/2" long. I do not know what else these go to, so that must be them. Thanks Again, Woodbutcher

Ray, Do you know if the 1928 Capital 1-Tons also used springs? Regards, Paul

Looking at the parts book it lists the spring, but does not include or reject the truck. I would assume it also gets the springs.
