I have a 4 cylinder head and was hoping someone in this forum can help me identify it. It has the number 348540 and a bowtie cast into the top of the head and has no valve cover. Any help is appreciated.

I thought the 1928 engine had a valve cover. Mine has no valve cover. Do you know what year they started using a valve cover? I think it was early 1920's or late teens.

28 has a valve cover, mine has a cover, every 28 I have seen has a cover.
It's not how fast you can go, but how good you look at 20 MPH.

The 28 head is the only 4 cylinder pre 29 engine to have a 2 exhaust ports, and the casting number given in a previous posting..

I believe that 490's never had a valve cover.Model T Chevy trucks never had a cover. All else had a cover starting in 1915 or 16.

I have a 1924 Superior Touring with the original engine which does not have a valve cover. My understanding is that 1924 was the last year for not having a valve cover although (again my understanding) the 1922 thru 1927 heads are interchangable. Incidentally, my head is cracked (the car one). If anyone has a good one for sale, I am looking.

I forgot about that. The earlier model H, FA and FB did have valve covers, up to 22. My bad.

Hey Bill - My 1925 motor has two valve covers. Not that they do much for containing the oil, but probably function as a retainer for the two pads that you soak in oil and rest atop the valve train.
Have you checked out the old car museum, which is close to Yuma in Bard Calif? They have a lot of cars and parts. Not all for sale, but maybe worth checking out. I have a couple single port heads that would work on your car, but so far they have not been checked for cracks. If I end up with an extra, I could bring it down your way next fall, if you haven't found one by then.

I also have a couple of heads but would want to clean them up and have them crack cked first. Came with a 23 that the boss bought.

Roger, thanks for the tip on the musuem in Bard. Had not heard about it so will check it out. I notice you are from Milton, Wa. I spend summers in Coeur 'd Alene, Idaho. If you will let me have your e-mail address I'll contact you again next summer to see where I am regarding the head.
