Did chevy ever build a high volume oil pump in 1928? I have a couple of 4cyl oil pumps that I am cleaning up, and one of them is different than the other. The one in question is Part# 2w-360954 oil pump . The pump blades are much larger with two over/under blade springs. The other pump (Part#346831) has much smaller blades with a single spring. Both of the pumps have a different shaped houseing, but are equal in length and both fit my motor. Would the pump with the bigger blades and double springs be a better choice for my motor?? compared to the little blades single spring. My parts book only show's the smaller pump with small blades and single spring.

Billy Possum created a gear pump to replace the vane type. i believe both the Filling station and Gary Wallace carry it. Plan on spending about $300 CAD on it.

Hi Shawng The pumps I have are straight shaft with no gears. The larger pump has 7/8" deep by 5/8" blades with two springs. The smaller pump has 1/2" deep by 5/8" blades with a single spring. Could the larger pump be from a truck motor???? I looked through all my books and found no info on this larger pump. I can send you some pic,s if it would help.

The pump no. 360954 is listed in the 1928 4 cylinder parts book for C,N which is Capital and National. The part number 346831 is the pump body listed in the July '27 parts book for C or 1927 Capital vehicles.
Looks like the pump was given higher capacity for 1928 engines and retrofitted to 1927 engines.

Jay sounds like you have the 29 six cylinder pump ,looks same as 28 but the Vanes and the body are about 1/8" bigger in depth, just a note I have used the billy possum pump and I removed it pumps to well and washed the oil out of the centre main gallery and I ran the bearing . the releif spring works but the 28 has a .050" hole in the base of the oil distributor that feeds the centre main gallery ,with that pump it's pressure and volume are to great .No problems with the original Vane pump or the larger 29 pump.

I wonder if anyone else has had a problem with the Billy Possum pump. Hopefully someone else will comment.

Well, maybe not many of us have seen one or had one on our car. I find the original one still works fine on my 28. As long as it is pumping 12-18 PSI at startup and has 5 to 10 PSI at cruise I feel that it is doing a good job. I keep 5 quarts in and when it gets a qt low I change the oil. I use 30 wt. Penzz oil or Quaker State off the shelf at wally-world, or 10W-40 If I can't find 30 wt. any of the modern HD oil is a lot better than the stuff they used new.

I installed one of billy possum oil pump ( from the filling station) in my 28. I used the recommened pickup wich required a lot of modification to fit inside the oil pan. After installation the pump has worked better than expected.

If you were around when the "School is in Session" was active, you should remember that I used a 1936 gear pump modified, in my engine. The engine has since covered over 2000 miles and everything on the engine is still purring like a kitten.

Hi Chipper Do you know if the 1927 (346831) oil pump has the same psi as the 1928 (360954) oil pump, or are they different for psi rateings.
