The windshield wiper on my 1953 Bel Air on the driver's side works fine (the car has a double-action fuel/vacuum pump), but the passenger side wiper just sits there. If I push the passenger side wiper back to the far right edge of the windshield while the driver's side wiper is operating, it will kick back to the bottom on its own and sit idle again. The fact that it kicks back tells me the cable is still there and isn't broken - does it sound like it has loosened or is something else amiss? Any ideas on how to remedy this?

Sounds like the cable has come off the pulley in the middle. As Skip says, take a look under there and see if you can observe the cables going to each side wiper.
