Hi Everyone,

Question, I'm helping my uncle with a 31 and we need to install a new ring and pinion. Problem is we can't find anyone how can rivet the ring gear onto the carrier.

Can you give me an idea of what type of shop I'm looking for? What type of capacity they will need to do this? Like a 40 ton press maybe?

Also what do you think about bolting the ring gear on?

When I changed to high speed gear on my 31 "Petrine" in 2008 I had two choices:

To replace the original rivets with NOS rivets, which I have, or use bolts/nuts and glue the nuts to the bolts with Loctite.,(but not the one making it impossible to remove the nuts after assembling).

As many others could report they have had no trouble with gluing, we went for that solution. First clean the parts very well to remove any oil. Gluing was also recommended (and bolts/nuts enclosed) by the US-maker of the new gears, even if that is not the "original" way.

Hi Solan,

Where did you get the bolts & nuts from? Is Larry now supplying them with the gears?

The latest ring gear/pinion sets are all gone, but write to Larry Jackson and ask where to get the bolts and nuts. They must be stock.

Good luck, and remember the glue.

I got my bolts from Larry. I am pretty sure that they are stock grade 8 bolts. If you do not hear from Larry send me a PM and I will find his phone number for you. :vcca:

I installed my Larry Jackson 3:50 ring and pinion set a few years ago and instead of riveting the ring to the carrier I bolted it with 3/8" grade 8 bolts and nuts but since the holes in his gear was just a bit smaller than 3/8" I had to mill out to make them fit and then had to grind the corners of the nuts so that they would clear the housing. You of course can rivet the gear but it will take a die and at least a 20 ton press. Larry was not supplying bolts, just rivets at the time I got mine because a standard bolt would not fit.
