When these left the factory, did they have any color applied or where they just bar metal?

If it is a model with an iron bell housing its painted at the factory with the engine.
It it has an aluminum bell housing its unpainted but will have over spray next to the engine because the engine was painted after the bell housing was attached.

I didn't think of it being a PG.....but then again the PG has no bell housing.
I have always maintained the cast iron PS's were not painted but the factory assembly line pictures show nice black PG's lined up in a row.

Every orignal CI PG I saw was painted black, I have two in the gararge (a 59 and a 62 unit) both came out of low milage original cars I parted out and they are black. I know they were never rebuilt.
I have some pretty grimey bellhousings with original paint and they have a lot of engine paint on them, more than what I would consider overspray.
