If I am correct the original cable for the 48 is a flat strap
If I convert to a big 4-O cable for a better ground how will this effect judging??Should I wrap it a more original cloth material?

The original grond cable was a woven flat strap. If you can locate one that is of the same size as the original it will work just fine. I am sure that they are readily available.
Points would be deducted for an insulated cable.

I am presently using the flat strap as stated above
After all the discuss about the big ground cables I purchassed 3 ft of 4/0 cable and it is about 3 time the weight compared to the strap...I guess I will leave it as is.

If you don't plan having it judged then it would not make any differance.

You can use the 4/0 round cable for your positive battery cable. That should give you more cranking power also.
