Where is the location of the Stop Light Switch on a 1940 Sedan?
Thanks, Wes

Thanks Tiny - There it is, I was looking around the brake pedal, looks like the horn may be getting power from there also.

The stop light switch gets power from a terminal on the light switch that is live at all times. The horn relay gets power from a wire that runs from the starter (positive battery cable connection) to the ammmeter. This wire is of a larger gauge as the horn has a high amp draw.

Chevgene, The reason I said it looks like it goes to the horn buton is that there are (3) wires on the stop light switch, (2) of which look like original wire and one somewhat new that goes up the steering column, I will have to check it out when I wire up the turn signals, which may be a challenge as I'm not really clear on the stop light wiring arrangement for the turn signals yet..........

If its "add on" turn signals that share the stoplight filiment in the rear bulb, then the stoplight current from the switch will go to the turn signal switch where it can be interupted if the corresponding turn signal has been applied.

The wire that goes into the steering mast jacket is a gouund wire. When you depress the horn you are just grounding the circuit. Just something to keep in mind.

I may have missed it, but when you add turn signals you use the one wire that goes to the back of the car for the LR stop signal. Then it is necessary to run an additional wire from the RR back to one of the wires on the turn signal switch.

That would be correct. Each rear stoplight/turn signal(left and right) must have its own wire coming from the turn signal switch. The turn signal switch will also have 2 wires going to the front turn signals(1 to each side) and a feed wire from a switched hot and a feed from the switched side of the stoplight switch. Should be a total of 6 wires to the turn signal switch. If this is not correct for early systems I expect to be corrected.

wes, it is possible that the wire going up the mast is hooked up wrong, that wire should be a ground wire unless the previous owner hooked up a side mount horn button on the column. i found on the car i bought, the previous owner had rigged and bypassed the wiring. so i had a fun time troubleshooting the electrics. it might be something you might take a look at closer to avoid a short. just a thought..kw
