I got my hands on an "almost complete" spare tire carrier for my truck today! I could not be more excited about this because I have looked for one for almost the entire time it took me to restore my truck (over 8 yrs).

It matches up perfectly with the diagram that Gene provided me so i know that it is correct. I also have a slider bar that is not correct. if someone recognizes what it is for and needs it, let me know (photo on bottom of linked page)

The only missing part is the slider pin that goes in the end of the carrier. I posted photos and info on my web page. Spare tire carrier info and photos

Any suggestions as to what I might use as a replacement pin? I am also curious as to if the one end of the slider bar just bolts directly to the bed wood? It is hard to tell from the diagram that I have? I have also seen a photo where this was attached to an additional cross member but I don't think that this was original.

Tim,
I restored a 46 half ton several years ago. The bed was disassembled when I bought it. There was no additional crossmember. I bolted the slider bar directly to the wood flooring. Can't say this was correct but that was the only option I had without adding another crossmember.

The complete unit came with an additional cross piece that the slider was bolted to.

I am not sure what pictures I sent you back then but it may have been from the 1941 Engineering Features. If so the picture to the left will have "The Monorail Wheel Carrier" printed below the photo. This picture shows the frame cross member that the front of the carrier attaches to. Its bolted to the frame, looks like it could be angle iron, and it darker than the rest of the frame that can be seen in the picture. If you don't have this picture I will send it to you.

Heres some photos of the spare tire carrier that came with my truck. It bolts to the bed, with the center bolt on the upper piece going through a bed strip at a normal hole and the other two bolts on either side through the wood. I have seen other unrestored trucks with the same type. That said, I have also seen the type with the extra crossmember as the opper piece is slightly different. This type is depicted in the owners manual but I have never actually seen one installed.

Gene,

I see the Monorail Wheel Carrier photo you reference. It looks to be the same as Jon's wheel carrier. The one that I have is identicle to the one that is listed and shown in a diagram you sent titled Commercial Wheel Carrier 1/2 ton. In your original note back then you indicated that the diagram came from the Parts book.

I have the slider for both types. the rest of it looks different and there is an additional part in the Monorail system that is not part of the other system.

The pictur from the parts book is actually from a 1940 and prior. They continued to use the same picture for many years. That type appears to attach to the bed floor. The picure from the 1941 Engineering shows the cross member and note the little bracket that connects the cross member to the rail.
The 1941 style was used on 1/2 ton trucks through 1950.
I have looked through my other stuff and can't find a better picture.

So is my wheel carrier correct for my truck?

Notice in the engineering manual that the taillight is also mounted to the frame instead of the box. Perhaps when you bought them without a box there was an extra crossmember (Some years?)? (Just speculation!)

The picture is of a chassis and cab. There is nothing but the frame from the cab back. The tire carrier cross member would have been used for that tire carrier only. The little cross member was part of the tire carrier.
