This is a link to a previous post. It was quite a while back but I still think it is a shame that this gentleman went to the trouble to reproduce a Quality steering wheel that is a hard to find item and no one even bid on it.

Hope it helps.

There is a fellow who comes to the Portland OR swap meet every April. His sideline is wood steering wheels for various models and makes. I have not needed one for my '29 but the ones he turns out look really nice. He had one that looked pretty well spot on for a '28, and I think he had one for the '29/'30 as well. Sorry April is quite a ways away. Maybe somebody got his card.

thanks again.
if this guy does make me the wood. i`ll post up some pictures.

The wheels displayed at car show/flea markets were nice.

the wood working guy called me last night. he`s working on my wooden pieces right now. he told me in about a week he should be done with my wood. as soon as i get the wheel put together. i`ll post some pictures. i have been wanting this wheel for my car ever since i had my car. i have been on the hunt for over 8 yrs trying to put the right wheel back on my car. i hate that 31 wheel on the car now.

Very interesting about the crank up windshield. I purchased a 29 in September and have since totally disassembled it. I was wondering what the crank in the front of the car was for. Unfortunately the gears were somewhat brittle and part of all of the mechanism does not crank properly. How far down does the windshield drop?

The windshield raises up about 2". There are rebuild kits available to replace the crumbled gears. You will need to salvage the shaft that the crank goes on. You will have to send that in to the place for rebuilding and then they send you back that and all the parts you need. If you have trouble finding a kit send me a PM and I will look into my records to see where I got mine. I could also pass along some hints on the reasembly. Another note: If you replace your windshield with safety glass, using your windshield as a template, make sure the curved cut on the bottom is a perfect duplicate, otherwise when the window is down you will have leaks when it rains.

When I get home that is the first thing I will look at and figure out how it works. I still have the windshield and it is cracked so it will need to be replaced. Your information is very helpful and I really appreciate it.

i got my crank parts from the FS. it took about 3 weeks for me to get back the handle shaft and about a week to put it all together. one note. replace the dried up rubber moulding around the windshield. the windshield has to move up and down very free or you will strip out your new gears.

Just curious. How did your friend of a friend do the finger joints? If I remember correctly the ones on Ebay last year were done with a router and this does not give you the correctly shaped finger joints. I think that is why no one bid on them. The originals would have been done on a big shaper in the factory but I doubt that many woodworkers have these bits available. This is why I did mine on a table saw. Yes, I wrote the G & D article in question.

I am no expert on these wheels or the joint types, but I could not see a difference from my original steering wheel in my 1930 and the one pictured in the gentleman's ad. I usually save pictures from things that interest me but a search of my hard drive left me pictureless. Anyway my memory is not so good anymore, yours is probably better. Sorry for the mislead. blush
