Hello Experiance,
I am replscing the ring gear & piniion in a 1919 FB 50 and having trouble getting the two gears to mesh with the proper clearance. I have had the rearend and drive shaft apart 4 or 5 times now ane the gears are to tight or to lose. If you have experiance with this process please help. Any explination on the operation of the adjusting mechanism on the drive shaft would be apppreciated.
Thanks Hutch

Hutch,

This is way out, but since no-one else has replied....

Firstly, I don't know the FB50 back axle set up, but some years ago I bought a 26 which was mostly in pieces. I suppose the general arrangement of the '19 and the '26 rear axles would have been similar though. When the pinion shaft was turned by hand it felt "strange". I replaced the pinion bearings and the diff carrier races, with no improvement, and could not get the ring and pinion gears to mark evenly using engineers blue no matter what I did. Eventually took it to a very experienced transmission mechanic who finally worked out that the ring gear and the pinion had come from two different differentials which had different ratios and were not a matched pair. We tried several other spare pinions which I had, and one of those mated very well indeed with the original ring gear. Although the ring gear and pinion that came with the car were set up in place, they obviously had come from two different vehicles, and would not have lasted any time at all if they had been run together.

Might be worth checking if you have the same problem, though it is surely unlikely.

Frank.

Hutch,
The instructions for setting up your pinion and crown wheel is in the Chevrolet repair manual , covering the 490 and FA and FB models.printed 1919, second edition 1922. pages 87-89 97-98.

franco & jack39,
Thanks for the responce. The ring gear and pinion are new, I had them made in a machine shop so I know they are a good match. I have read the repair manual and find it dificult to fallow the instructions. Part of the problem seems to a spacer between the two drive shaft bearings, about 2 1/2 inches long, is a 1/4 inch to long now. I have no clue what could possibly be diffrent. I can't find enough adjustment to make up for the 1/4 inch differance. The new gears are identical to the old ones. Accept of course they are not broken.
hutch
