i have noticed that under acceleration in any gear the valves really chatter. is this due to the timing needed adjusted? i first thought it was the grade of gas i was using but now i'm using reg unleaded only. the motor has excellant pickup. there is no noise when i let up on the gas, but the annoying valve noise under a load is too much. should i adjust the distributor a degree forward or retard? any suggestions would be helpful...kwhite

I expect your valve cladder on acceleration is spark knock and not valve noise. Valve noise is rpm dependent but never found it to be worse on acceleration vs deceleration. Of course I have only been driving these old Chevys for 50+ years and still learning.

Does your car start hard or turn over slow when it at operating temperature? This would be another indication of the timing being to far advanced. Detonation can kill a engine really fast, I'd be on top of finding out more about this noise you have under acceleration.

KW, check the timing for TDC and adjust the rockers. If that doesn't take care of the chatter, check for squirrels. Best, Charlie

don, the car starts fine, no slow grind at running temps. i expect that the problem might be the octane selector that needs to be adjusted. but i'm not sure of how to do it. does it need to be retard a notch?

Mark or remember where the current setting is on the Octane Selector. RETARD the setting on the selector and then give it a test drive. If it changes the noise, experiment with various settings that cures the noise and does not affect the starting ability.
