I have finally got my rear main oil leak down to an acceptable ammount,THANKS EVERYONE FOR ALL THE HELP, now I can move on to a couple of other issues. First, I have a miss(popping back through the carb, at higher rpm. Everything is fine at idle all the way through midrange which is where it starts to miss and pop back. When I drive it everything is fine up to about 40-45 above that I get the miss. Second my amp gauge bounces from a charge rate of about 8 to below 0 showing a discharge even with a little rpm. When I turn the lights on it shows slight discharge. Any help appreciated. My bad, it's a 32.

The comm. on your generator armature may need turning or you might have a weak brush arm spring in the generator. Try pushing down on each brush as the car is running and see if that corrects the problem. Keep in mind that when posting questions about your car always include the year as well since the answer could vary depending upon the year of the vehicle.

The popping sounds like a timing and or plug gap issue. Check the Chevrolet Web Page for info on that. http://1931chevrolet.com/Also, is your fan belt reasonably tight? If not, it will cause your amp meter to jump.
My Chevy is over 70 years old and still running great. I hope I keep running cuz I just turned 81 !!

The other thing that could cause 'popping' and a missfire at higher RPM is a weak or broken valve apring or a sticky valve. Another likely possibility is carbon tracking inside the distributer cap causing the plug to fire when it should't while a valve is open. I would check the dist cap and rotor first, then remove the valve cover and check the valves and springs. Phil Lipton

While the cap is off check the spring tension on the points. Some new replacements have a separate spring that some unsuspecting backyard mechanic might toss out with the box. (me) The weak tension leaves the points open when revved up.

I purchased a set of valve spring and am going to try those this weekend. I hope I can get them installed without pulling the head. I did not think about a carbon arch in the cap, I will give the cap a good look as well. I am not sure what the extra spring is for the points, I did install a new set of points just to eliminate that as a posibility but did not see any thing extra in the box.
