Ken - these are covers for the metal stems on inner tubes so equipped with metal stems, which are threaded all the way down to the base. I think they were originally nickle plated.

So were this originally installed on early chevrolets? I have some of these as well in my collection of parts. I thought they were some sort of a small screw driver handle or something.

Those valve stem covers were used on all early models at least up to 1928. There are several different styles depending on year. Wish I had an accurate list with pictures for what was used each year. Only know a few.

Thanks for the info. I almost threw them in the garbage when I was going through all the parts for my car!! Good thing I have difficulty throwing anything away!

Those nice pieces are used on both T-F**Ds and 490 from 1916 and up. Solan finds them posh and is very proud of his 4 wheels with the longstemmed, tube valves and nickelplated covers. He even have some spares if someone pinch one. You have to order more expensive inner tubes with longstemmed valves if you want such covers to be used on the old ones.

They are still easy to get from Snyder and other F**D-suppliers, but the original ones are the best in Solan's opinion!

Here is Solan showing the right front wheel with the valve cover easily seen (at six o'clock):

You are looking at the speedometer hose with wire to the optional Stewart-Warner speedometer (in miles) on the dash board.

But try to guess what is the material in the small wheel connected to the wire in the hose, and driven by the left front wheel? HD-drivers from same period will know the answer.

Solan,

Have you ever replaced the fiber gear? Just wondering how long they last, in miles.

The small cogwheel (to the right) has nothing to do with (syntetic) fibre or hydraulic. It is most probably the original one from long ago as it is made of same material as the similar wheel on a H-D MC. same year. So still no need for a replacement cogwheel on my car after nearly 100 years.

The cogwheel is colored near black because of oil/dirt, but has a complete different color when new.

More suggestions would be nice to receive, folks.

The gear wheels could possibly be old style grey fibre(similar to the red fibre gasket material)or possibly very well tanned and hardened leather?

Very nice suggestion, CJP's 29. Congratulations!

The correct reply is:

The material of the cogwheel is brown, very well tanned and hardened ox leather. It works excellent.

By using leather (instead of metal) the noice was reduced to low or none when driving.

Looking forward to your visit, but you need to come in the period from May to October. I have been told I should worry more for the noises coming from the turning engine and drive line, than the cogwheel.

But it is nice to know that such a wheel is still working without any trouble.

As you can see from the picture below, the T-F******Ds also had similar or equal cogwheel as the 490s:
