Hi,
I need help in dating this engine and its size.

I picked up a chev motor with the block cast number of 3835814.It also has the number 3 GM and a circle underneath with a triangle in the circle.

The engine number is R622131.Most likely Canadian.

The head has the number 3835499 which after a search relates to 50-52.

The motor has a short sideplate on the pushrod side which does not cover the sparkplugs.
Is the motor a 216 or 235? and how can you tell the difference?

The oil pipe for the tappits does not pass through the cyl block but comes from the rear of the camshaft area in behind the pushrod cover up to the tappits through a hole in the head similar to the earlier 216.
There is no oil outlet near the oil distributer valve so where does the line to the oil pressure guage go?There is only a plug underneath which I think is a return to the sump.

Cheers
Rusted

It is a Canadian engine. It could be a 216 or a 235, at this point you may need to measure the bore and stroke. In the early '50's the 216 and 235 Canadian engines used the same casting for the block I believe.
Does the engine have splash oiling or full pressure? If its splash there will be a little "tin" plate on the left side of the block, just behind the exhaust pipe and held inplace with 3 screws. The full pressure engine does not have it.
The 1952-1954 engines also had a flat boss on each side of the block with 4 holes - for the side motor mount brackets.
The 1953 and up Canadian engines all had the full pressure.
The info I have states the 1951 Canadian 216 low pudh rod cover block had a casting number of 5792153 and I suspect this may be a 1952 block. These blocks used the basic 1950-52 235 (US) cylinder heads but the intake valves were 1/16" smaller.
This cross breed engine came out in mid 1951 and the enine serial numbers began with 422901.
Some one may come along with better info.
