I have some questions on the VCCA judging process. When the cars are judged , are points counted off for parts that were not installed on the assembly line? Like if one were to use Gates fan belts and the word gates was on the belt? would that be counted off for parts like that? Say other items that did not have all the marking that the original part had but was a service replacement do those parts take a big hit in the points lost in judging?

The car should be as it came from the factory and sold by the dealer. Any accessories should be genuine Chevrolet for that year. Points are deducted for aftermarket and replacement items. You can go to the VCCA web site and check out the judging manual. It will give more information regarding the judging process.

Skip is correct in what he says. Essentially the whole idea is "restored to original."
You can find the info Skip mentioned by arrowing/scrolling all way down to the bottom right of the page. There you'll see "VCCA Info Links." One of the links is "judging." Click on that and you can check out the judging manual and a judging form. Lots of reading; but you'll get the gist of the whole "original" idea real quickly.
Just a thought about this judging idea/question you brought up....
Bill.

I have usually found the judging to be relatively fair. I have not seen alot of attention given to factory original fan belts. Yes it might be a 1 point deduction. Headlights should be factory originals rather than the aftermarket brands. Replacement items should look like the originals. Batteries are some of the hardest things to have the same as the original. For most of us, we put in a Delco replacement battery and just accept the couple of point deduction. The correct Delco battery is currently being reproduced for my 1940 Chevy and the cost is $250+. Too much money for me. Putting in a DieHard or K-Mart battery just doesn't look right. The important thing is to get the car close to correct and then have it judged. Don't loose alot of sleep if the judges miss some obvious mistakes or if they "nit" pick on a small item. Judging is suppossed to be fun, informative and a learning experience.

As dtm wrote "Judging is suppossed (sp) to be fun, informative and a learning experience." Not too sure that all have fun but the other two are definitely in order. I have never had judges take all the point deductions that are warranted. Yes they sometimes take a few points off for correct items but that is more than offset by those they don't take.
A word to the wise, before relying 100% on judging results check other authorities to verify that the deduction is correct. That is one of the services that the Technical Advisers provide to VCCA members. Again not all of them have 100% of the information that someone would require. They are human and make mistakes too.

LKS,
Chip and Skip are correct in the philosophy of VCCA Judging. I also agree with Chip in that you should not loose sleep over a Gates belt. I believe the judging system has matured over the last 10 years and a member can successfully go through the system with some points taken off. The one thing I have seen is that the consistency of our judging system has improved a lot accross the country. Keep up the good work everyone! Steve

I will give you another example, I am going to replace my fuel pump. OK I bought a new AC Delco fuel pump, it is not configured like the old one. The new one once it is out of the box, you would never know it was a AC Delco. The old one had AC on the side. And the pump is hard to see on the car. I mean should I sweat the small stuff like that?

NO- If you have it judged 10 times some one may spot it once or twice and your home free the other times and can gloat that they missed it.....But don't try it at a Corevtte Meet.
