Firstly welcome to Chevy Chatter.
I am in Aus where we have a number stamped into the chassis but in the US I believe there should be a plate fixed to the floor near the front seat. Some states used the engine # for ID instead of or as well as the plate #.

Tony is right about most states using the engine number as the VIN, through '55 I believe. You most likely have a data plate somewhere with the serial number but someone else will have to help you with the location.

Thanks alot guys. I looked there again and no tag. I called Chevrolet Heritage division and they told me the same thing. The part that gets me is there doesn't seam to be any holes where the tag would of been mounted and there also isn't any rot? Ever heard of anywhere else? Any chance one of you would email me a picture of the location of there's so I can make sure I'm getting this right? motermanracing@mstarmetro.net Thanks

The tag is mounted to the passenger front floor with very 2 small screws. It is not uncommon for this tag to be missing.

What's the number on your title? As noted above most states used the engine number rather than the serial number.

Since you ask about alternate locations for the VIN plate - I have a 1940 Chev Master 85 parts car with a tag on the cowl. It is on the front face of the cowl, right side (looking forward) just above the horizontal reinforcing ridge in the cowl stamping - about 3 inches below the radiator support bar.

This is a right hand drive car assembled in South Africa, so not likely much help in finding your tag, but there were other locations used.

Thanks for the responses. I don't have the title for this car yet. Thats why I was looking for the vin. tag. I did ask the Utah state DMV about vin. tags and motor numbers with no response. They don't seam to know if it was titled off the engine number or not. I have a license plate off the car from Texas but the DMV there won't talk to me without a vin#. My engine # is OK1771850 The 0 on the end has been double struck with the first 0 on a 45 degree angle and the second struck on top of the first towards lower half on 70 degree angle. Not sure what this is supposed to be? Or how many digits it should be. Any clues? Thanks again everyone trying to help me out.

Contact the folks you get your tag from. In Kansas it's the department of revenue not KDOT (Kansas Department of Transporation). Ask them what information they need to issue a title when you don't have one. Someone there will have to know. I seriously doubt no one in Utah has never had this issue before. Some states will assign you a number, some use the engine number and I imagine there are other "fixes" used in other states. Perseverance will pay off eventually. Good luck.

i had a similer problem with the title: the title i had did not match the vin on my car in kentucky...bummer... evidently it was a salvage title to sell the car. i had to make several trips back and forth to the county clerks office to prove ownership was mine. it was traced through the state police office to make sure it wasn't a stolen car. after many weeks of back tracking and researching paper work, i was issued a new vin. it will take some patience but you should be able to obtain a new vin. remember to keep all of your paper work and you will have no problem...good luck!

After cleaning up the floor by the passanger seat I did find the original location of vin. tag. It was missing. The State of Utah sent a lady over to look it over and she issued me a new vin. number and attached it to the a-pillar on the drivers side. Now I just have to apply for a new title. Pretty painless over all. Thanks for all the help. I do have another question though. I don't have a gas spicket sticking out of the right rear fender. Anyone ever seen this? Wondering if the fender is off another model. All the 1940 Chevs in the pictures have a gas spicket coming out of the right rear fender. Thanks

Do you find a filler tube anywhere on the car?

The business coupes did not have a filler in the fender. They had a center mounted gas tank and the filler was on the quarter panel about a foot behind the door.
How do you fill the tank now? It wouldn't be too difficult to cut the correct hole in the fender. A large rubber groment goes around the filler so it will hide any sins.

Hi I have a 1940 Ridemaster Deluxe Australian build and I am not able to find a chassis no. Someone said there is a nubber on the chassis. Would you be able to say where on the chassis. Bit hard to find anything on mine as it is all coated with under body paint. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Gerry Welcome to Chatter
On all the Australian built Chevs I have seen look at the left chassis rail near where the steering box would exit the chassis. The numbers are often very lightly stamped and you may need fine wet and dry paper rubbed lightly to reveal the stamping. May be easier to see with the left front wheel turn for a left turn or removed.
The number maybe repeated on a brass plate riveted/screwed to the engine side of the firewall but will need to be found on the chassis for registration purposes.
