Does the wire from the positive battery cable on the starter go on the left or right side of the amp gauge as viewed from the back of the gauge?

Here's the wiring for 1931. That may help explain it for you. http://1931chevrolet.com/Diagrams/1931harness.pdf

I think if you get it wrong it will just read backwards, in other words it will show charge when it is discharging and discharge when it is charging.

I got the sight to open so I can print and check the wiring. Ed I think you are correct in what the amp gauge will do if hooked up backwards and I think that is what mine is doing becouse if I turn the lights on it shows about a 10 amp discharge. I think it may actually be a 10 amp charge with the vehicle running.

OK, what does the gauge show without the engine running and the lights on? If it is wired correctly it should show a discharge. With the engine running with no lights or accesories on it should show a charge if the generator is working.

looking from the back side, the hot wire from the starter goes to the RH terminal of the amp gauge. looking from the seat it would be the left terminal. simple way to check is with key off turn on lights. should show discharge if wired correctly
