Our '36 Chevs were offered with Delco radios. This leaves me with a wide window of sets to chose from. I had a Philco universal set serviced but was dissapointed with the volume. Is it correct for me to assume that the 41 output tube doesn't have enough punch? I had another dash speaker Delco radio serviced and the 6V6 tube has lots of volume. Should one choose a set by the output tube? I see 6F6's and other output tubes were used. I have the correct '36 control head.

The Gain ( volume) in a tube radio is amplified through all of the tubes in the radio from the Radio frequency stage all the way to the Output tube. Each tube has a certain amplification,
RF amp ,mixer, IF amp , detector, output.
They are also coupled( joined) to the next stage by condensors(capacitors)(and transformers) which can become low in their value, and not couple the stages . so gain is lost, instead of increased.
I would check all of your tubes out, and see if any are weak, and then look at replacing the paper and wax capacitors with modern polyester replacements.

For best satisfaction in a car radio is to select the correct radio and then spend the money to have it restored. There is more than one radio that is correct for your 1936 car.

As a rule, it costs about the same to have a correct radio restored, versus the after market Motorola, Philco, etc.

Thanks for the pat on the back. I see at least another year on both columns.
