Yesterday I changed the oil in my '54 235, including sucking out every last drop in the nice add-on oil filter cannister. I put in a new filter and five qts of oil. (Owner's manual says engine oil capacity is 5 qts.)

It seem like I've always put in 5 qts. over the 30 years I've been changing the oil and filter in that car. (???) But when I checked the oil level, it was on the add line.

Maybe "old-timers" is setting in. Looks like it needs 5 1/2 or 6 qts with an add-on oil filter????

Please advise on two questions.

1. Does the add line on a '54 dipstick mean add 1/2 qt or full qt???

2. Also, How much oil is required with add-on oil filter???

Thanks.

Bill.

I believe you need to add a quart for the oil filter. Remember the oil filter was not standard at that time.

When the oil is at the add line it will take one quart to bring it up to the full mark. Oil expands when hot so between that and how long of a time is allowed for drain-back your reading could very (or is that vary?)
All 216-235 engines hold 5 Qts and add one more Qt. if the filter is changed. (unless you have a heavy duty truck with the extra deep pan - used for working on steep inclines.
In fact the 1929-36 engines held 5 Qts except for the 1933-1934 Standards which held 4 1/2 Qts.

Thanks to Jim and Gene for their input.

I added another qt (Now 6 total) and that brought the oil to just a hair over full on the stick. Sure seems odd I didn't remember SIX, with the filter. As before, I guess that might be "old-timers" setting in....

Also drained the radiator 3 times now. Pleased to see how 'clean' the coolant was. No rust or crap looking stuff.

I'm getting ready to store it off-site for a while. Don't like that idea. But that's the way it has to be. I hate not having that nice '54 around here.

Thnx again....

Bill.
