I routinely attend meetings 70-80 miles away from my home. It is not necessary to attend all of them or you can only attend those special outing/meetings. The San Jacinto Region has one coming up the first Saturday in November at Youth Reach Houston where we will donate money to this worthwhile charity. It is on the NE side of Houston just off US 90. Will be further for me than you.

As this club started in 1961, covering cars from the beginning and including all types and sub brands, it is quite natural the clear majority of cars will be from the years before 1960. And as long as the old members continue as members, loving the old ones, the majority of tours will be arranged for the older cars as well. Even if the club is for much younger cars, like yours, you should not be expecting "the old ones" also to make tours suitable for your modern car and mind. Why not do it yourself?
You have every chance to plan and be in charge of a tour you would appreciate to join yourself. Join with some neighbour Chevrolet friends and start planning right now for the next outdoor season. Contact members arranging the "old" tours, and read some of the stories in G&D, and you will be fast learning what to do and to avoid to make the tour a success.
Start now and you will be able to make a tour including shows already next year.
Good luck!

I keep seeing V-8 Tours mentioned. Do they not accept Corvairs or maybe Novas with six cylinders? When we hosted the HAPPY DAYS TOUR we accepted any Chevrolet between 1955 and 1975. The HAPPY DAYS TOUR for 2010 will accept anything between 1955 and 1975 no matter how many cylinders they have. Do we mean V-8 ERA as done in judging?

You live in Texas and 100 miles is too far to drive?... Shoot... I only drive 140 miles to the LSR meetings. When I first joined the LSR I drove from Midland to Arlington 314 miles, for meetings. Just get a good old ecnomicial Chevrolet car and take off ....Yep, you will need to pack a sack lunch and your razor........before you know it you will be there! But then I know members in the metroplex that gripe about driving 25 miles to meetings, just can't please some people, I reckon....... :vcca:

I think that those Tri-five and SS and performance cars guys don't want to tour with somebody that can pass up a gas station without stopping to fuel up. It is boreing to have to wait in your Corvair or Vega on them V/8s to fuel up ever hour.
Just kidding, The main thing that you will need on a V/8 tour is a big trunk to haul all the luggage and spare parts unless you trailer your V/8

I can keep up with the V8s driving my 37 p/u with a 235 now that I have taller gears and a 5 speed so I should be allowed in any tour.

I think one reason some folks think we are more into touring than shows is the G & D articles. There is much more to write about and more interesting reading about a tour than a show. Most of the tours are several days and most shows are one day. Even the multi day shows are basically the same. They are just in different places. Just my two cents worth.

Even though my 37 has a 6 cylinder the 4 and 6 tours might not like me tagging along since I made it so it can cruise 65 all day long and I will be miles ahead of all the rest of the group,it will keep up with the V8s but they wont want me hanging with them.

Some tours have the vehicles travel generally together. Others give you a set of instructions and times to be places and you are on your own. On many tours there are a few "hot rodders" with the overdrives, etc. that try to impress by getting places before others and passing when ever they get a chance. It might impress a few but most would rather enjoy a leisurely drive thru the countryside and see, hear, smell the environment along the way. We all can rush places every day and get frustrated on the road. It is truly a pleasure to be able to take our time.

Just tell the hot rodders to pull off a couple plug wires before the tour begins.

I hope those on the 4 and 6 tours take the back roads as I would hate to see the carnage if those slower vehicles got out on the highway with people going 70 plus. I love taking the back roads but I dont like being forced to.

Really Jeff it don't work that way!
Have you ever seen bikers riding on the highways, they have just as much right as the guy in the 18 wheeler that blows them off the road!
Usually when we drive our old cars on a major 4 lane highway the wrecks are modern cars running together rubbernecking the old Shiny Chevrolets!

Just because you belong to VCCA, really does not entitle you to attend every event that someone in VCCA sets up. It is fun to attend some of these events set up for a certain age or type of Chevrolets. VCCA covers all Chevrolets. Most of the events only require that you be a VCCA member or guest of a VCCA member.
Others limit the number of cars and the year and model that the event is set up for. It is the Event organizer that has the say as to who should attend.
I have a problem with some folks that get their panties in a wad if they think that they are being shunned, when it isn't YOU that is being shunned, just a limit on the CARS!...Get yourself a Chevrolet that is included in the event and see how welcome you really are, if you apply soon enough to be within the limited age or number of entries for that event.

For example the preponderance of the attendees to the 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder tours are returned the same week as the application is received. This does not prevent someone from attending the first time. Sometimes all do not respond and new applications are used to fill those vacancies. Total number of cars is limited as a giant number would clog up the roads, and we do NOT, wish to upset the motoring public. It also poses problems with finding places to visit and eat that can accommodate the total number of cars and people.

I come close to getting clobbered going the speed limit around here all the time and if I were to go any slower all my vehicles would have the rear ends pushed up to the wheels,it must be differnt in the wide open spaces of Texas but around here everyone is up everyone elses behind and I can just see a group of vintage cars coming through and the idiots we have running into them. Really Jeff it don't work that way!

Particularly the 4-cylinders, will move over the white stripe and drive, if the apron is wide. As soon as the traffic has past, we move back into the slow lane. If there is an obstruction, bridge, adjoining cross road, etc, we also move back across the white lane and travel in the slow lane. Most modern car drivers recognize the three position hand signals and obey them, however we are ever mindful of those who don't or don't care.

I am a little touchy with the idiots on the road right now since my daily driver got totaled a couple days ago by a idiot that could not see a stop sign,if I was in my 37 I would be in jail as I would have beat him to a pulp.

The saving grace about driving an old car is the older the more attention it gets. The more attention the more other drivers will give a little more room. Sorta like big trucks and trailers, people pay attention to them too but for a different reason. There are a few idiots that are "centro-spective". Nothing outside their personal world means anything to them. You just have to watch out for them.

Yes, I think most traffic accidents common are completely idiotic circumstances, Drunks driving, complete disregard for traffic laws, speeding, and sleeping at the wheel, for various reasons. fatique, boredom and Sleep apnea, stopping on a controlled access road. Very few accidents happen because the other driver was not speeding or driving slowly, usually when all of those involved were at the top of the speed limit and beyond. Worry about the other drivers, but the main thing is be attentive about where you are, what is happening in the moving the danger zone. Watch the oncoming vehicles left front wheel, it will indicate an invasion of the zone before the vehicle actually begins to turn. actually

I think I got this going in another direction so its time to go back,I would like to go on a tour some day and if there ever is one close to where I live I will participate. I dont think I will go nuts trying to get collect a bunch of miles but a leisurely drive seeing the sights would be fun with similar vehicles, just dont put me in the back of the pack as my 235 powered 37 p/u wants to go now that it has better gears and overdrive.

If you are on my tour I want you up front. I think it is obvious why.
