Also acquired a standard transmission with the numbers C254 on it. Does this mean March 2nd of 1954? If so are the 54 standard transmissions a better trans than the 51? I understand that the 54 may have better gears & synronisers than the 51. Would I be better off if I installed the 54 trans into my 51 when I put the motor back in?

The 1954 standard transmissions began with either a M or an S. The PG began with a C. The late 1953 and the 1954 standard transmissions has some minor "tweeeks" but were no "stronger" than the 1949-52 units. They did have the two rows of needle bearings between the front and rear shafts. This cured the jumping out of high gear problem some of the previous transmissions had. They also hade the needle bearing cluster gears rather than the bushing type. Not a great improvement under normal use. I would prefer a 1954 to a 1951, all things being equal. ...but a 1951 unit in good condition would be better than a 1954 in unknow condition.
The 1954 case will not bolt up to the 1951 mount as it has not tapped mountholes in the bottom of it. The 1952 and up mounted bt the rear eatension housing.

I know that my 51 trans is in good shape. 58,000 original miles, shifts nice and smooth. Taking that into consideration & the fact that I would have to drill and tap the 54 it's almost a no brainer to keep the one I have in the car. Thanks, I appreciate it.

Now that I have a 54 powerglide rear end in this car (51) will this throw off my speedometer that much? I think I just went from a 4:11 to a 3:55 or 3:70 Can I take the speedometer gear out of the 54 standard trans & install that in the 51 trans?

The 1954 speedometer GEARS can be installed in the 1951 transmission. Both gears must be changed and the drive gear from the 1954 must be used as well as the driven gear. If you don't change gears the speedometer will be about 15% slow. If you do change the gears the speedometer will be about 5% slow. The above is providing you have the stock 6.70X15 tires. 5% at 60 MPH would be about 3 MPH.
