Hello -- Can someone out there please tell me how to remove the air cleaner on a 1930 Chevrolet truck? It has to be simple. I've tried but I don't want to break anything. Thank you.

It's simple if you have the correct carburetor and air cleaner. The air cleaner is held in place in the air horn by two 8-32 x 3/8 fillister head screws. These same two screws also hold on the choke/throttle cable bracket on the side of the air horn. Remove the two screws and the bracket, and the air cleaner will slide right out.

Thanks, Junkyard Dog. I followed your directions and it came right off. I planned to clean the copper filter element with gasoline, as the owner's manual says, but there was no filter material inside at all -- just a hollow shell. Is there a way to add filter material, or should I try to find a unit with a filter already inside?

Do a Chatter search of 'air cleaner' or similar words and you should get a few strings here with suggestions/comments about your air cleaner.

Leave it alone! You have a 1930 air cleaner, not a 1931 air cleaner. The 1930 air cleaner did not have a wire mesh element like the 1931 air cleaner. The air filtration for 1930 worked under centrifugal force, so no wire mesh was used. laugh laugh laugh

dawg: was the copper mesh element inside a 31 aircleaner natural color or was the whole deal painted/dipped to get the black finish on the air cleaner main body?if it was pinted/dipped, i'd suspect some or a lot of black overspray/dip on the copper mesh.mike

On the few original 1931 air cleaners that I have seen the air cleaner did not appear to be dipped in paint. If the air cleaner was dipped with the mesh, then the paint would saturate the wire mesh and the paint coating would tend to block the air flow through the air cleaner.  laugh laugh laugh

do you think the mfgr painted the individual stamped steel components, inserted the copper mesh, then crimped the components together? if that were the case, i'd expect the crimping process to scratch the black paint, at least the way my feeble methods would do it.mike

I would assume that the air cleaner was painted after the wire mesh was insterted, however the air cleaner was probably sprayed and not dipped. laugh laugh laugh
