Has anyone experimented with LED headlights. I realize current LED technology is not up to par with current bulb lighting, but a LED headlight would still be MUCH brighter than the poor headlights on my '31, and they would also draw much less of a load from the battery.
I would like to find a way to make these work. I've been scouring the internet searching for people who may have done this. I think that motorcycle owners would be the best to follow as their systems are more similar to ours than today's current cars.

I thought about it. there are some that are an array of leds around a central column that would work better than a single forward firing one. However the ones I saw were $25 each, so with shipping, exchange on the dollar and taxes (to Canada), i passed on the experiment. Here is the link to what I saw, scroll down...

Those are great. You make a good point about the price though, for what they cost I could have a good start at getting a 6v alternator.

Are those intended for headlight use, or are they just able to be used that way if one so desired.

As long as they physically fit, they will "work" as in light up. I would say they are not use specific. Since I never drive at night, they would just be to say the headlights work and no more. Who knows if you can actually focus the beam at all.

Might wanna try some of the 4WD , Jeep sites/magazines Ive seen LED lights on there and they love em'. They even have full on LED lighbars .
I have LED taillights on my 89 YJ . My freinds say they are extremely bright when they're behind me , which is great in the fog. One thing to remember is they'll trick your flashers into thinking you have a burned out light , so a heavy duty flasher fixes that.
Hope this helps. Best of luck.

unfortunately these sites will typically only be for 12V LEDs. ^V ones are harder to find. The link I mentioned above is one of the very few around for 6V bulbs. For the record, i did purchase some bulbs form this company for another application a year ago and they arrived very quick and were very good.

for us in germany LED lights is a NO GO area.

I mean, some modern cars of today have them as parking light or tail lights, but with an old car it is impossible.
All LED replacement bulbs are forbidden by law, and if they find LED bulbs after maybe an accident during night you will loose your insurance because of using forbidden parts. The laws are strict and complicate in germany. If they find LED bulbs during the all 2 year technical inspection, you will loose the license for the car and its taken away from road.

I did overhaul my complete electric, and did also renew the reflectors, and have good bright light now, as perfect a 6volt system may work.

Coming home just now from a long night drive...without any problems.
