Need some advice here. I removed my tank & sending unit because my guage pegs past full all the time. I grounded the gauge first with ign. on & it went to empty so I know the guage works.
Can anyone tell me if I can test if the sending unit out of the tank? If so, how is it done?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Broooo,

Sounds like you lost the ground on the fuel tank.

The sending unit will range from 0 - 90 ohms.
Use an Ohm meter to test.

When the fuel gauge pegs in the manner your's did - it is usally indicative of a broken wire from the gauge to the sending unit - OR - the ground wire on the fuel tank needs to be checked, cleaned, or repaired.

Thanks Ollie
I corrected the ground at the body, sanded it real well, before I removed the tank, still no go. Thats why I took the tank out.
The other end to the ground that is soldered on the top of the sending unit was pretty solid. I took the sending unit out & hooked it up to a meter. I hooked up to 100 then 10 and as I raised the level, the needle went down & opposite when I made the float go down (needle went up). That sounds wrong doesnt it?
What am I doing wrong? I dont know much about these meters.
Thanks for your answer
Broo

Did you ground the sending unit to the chassis of the car when you tested it with the fuel gauge??

Set you meter om Rx1 and recheck and let us know what the reading are at full up,midway, and full down. Which way the needle is moving, which side zero is on, when you touch the meter leads together what side is the needle on and when leads are apart.

I used the ground wire that is already attached if that's what you mean. I sanded the chassis down real good & still no good.

when I testing the sending unit the ohm meter had all, levels really high 95+ for empty, over 120 for full. guess it's off to the store for another sending unit...................
