Does anyone know where the radio antenna should be mounted on a (1949) Chevy 4400 ton and a half? I haven't yet mounted the radio antenna on my 4400 because I don't know where it is supposed to be. I have seen 4400s with a rod mounted on the driver's side fender with two attachment points, but I'm not sure that is a radio antenna.

The location is critical. Make sure you open the hood and check the rearward movement.

I would contact Chev's of the 40s and see if they have a template.

There are instructions for installing the antenna in the "Chevrolet Accessories Installation Manual for 1949 Passenger Cars and Trucks". It is available as a reprint from several sources. They don't specify exactly where to drill the hole in the fender other than to say to "locate drilling template on top of left front fender. Center punch and drill 13/16" hole. Clean burrs from hole and paint from underside of fender" Looks from the diagram that the placement of the hole for the antenna is relative to where the two holes for the braces are drilled in the fender baffle.

Thank you, Gene, Ray and Bob. I asked Chevs of the 40s months ago for a template. They said they would send one and didn't.

Ray, I don't know what you mean by rear movement.

I'll see if I can get the "Chevrolet Accessories Installation Manual for 1949 Passenger Cars and Trucks" literature.

I'm tired of holding the antenna out the window.

When the hood is opened the back of the hood moves backward further than the hood opening. If you mount the antenna too far forward on the cowl there is a chance the hood will hit and break the antenna.

Thanks, Ray. It's clear that one should open the hood and install the antenna in a location that doesn't interfere with the hood.

It goes on the cowl 'above' the mirror mounting and in front of the windshield post:

OK, got it installed. Works great.

Ray, I was an electonics technician in the Navy. We were just switching from vacuum tube to transistor technology back then so I had to learn both transistor theory and cathode chunk emission.

The radio plays fine when I'm outside the truck holding the antenna without it being grounded at all. Can it be that the input jack grounds the antenna to the case of the radio?

I bought the $14 antenna at Chevs of the 40s and not the $70 exact reproduction.

The antenna base is grounded to the cowl/fender. The ground sheath on the input cable is shielded and again is grounded to the radio case. This leaves the antenna mast and the center wire ungrounded and connected to the inside of the radio. The condition you describe is cured by making an antenna adjustment with the mast fully extended, the dial at the high end (1400), and adjust for max noise/volume.
