I have two questions today about the firewall grommets. The grommet I have for the main wiring harness also has a small hole (about 3/16" diameter) in addition to the large hole for the main wiring harness. Can someone tell me what gets routed through that small hole? What is the proper orientation of the grommet - small hole on top, on the bottom, ...?

Second question - I have the 3 hole grommet for the water temp gauge line, oil line and throttle cable. Is there any consensus on which gets routed through which hole? My grommet has two holes at the top (like the eyes on a face) and one hole in the middle towards the bottom. I guess this is another proper orientation of the grommet question too.

Thanks again.

Rumor has it that the small hole in the main wiring harness is for the hood release cable.

On my 48 the small hole carries the hood release, so the rumor is true.
Orientation is.......the small hole is on the right as you look at it from outside the car (nearest the drivers fender)
I shoulda took a picture!! This grommet and layout is original on my car so maybe its correct?

I can't guaranty accuracy of orientation on this one becausemore than one personn has had their hand on this one, but here's what I have.
The throttle cable goes thru the lone hole which is located on the right side leaving the two holes in a vertical layout on the left side.....oil line thru the top hole and temp gauge line thru the bottom. Might be right, might be wrong, but that's what I have.

Yup, shoulda took a picture again!!

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Ken. Sounds good to me. Unless someone comes up with a more definitive rationale, that's the way I'll be installing mine. You would have thought I'd have taken a picture of my firewall or drawn a diagram before I started taking it apart...

I like your 48 Aerosedan. I got started in the VCCA back in 1973 with a $40 Aerosedan. My cousin convinced me it wasn't worth saving and so we actually scrapped it and I bought a 47 Aerosedan. Worked on it for a number of years, ended up selling it and now have the 48 convertible. It would be nice to get it put together so I could actually drive it! Haven't done that yet with any of those cars...

I agree that the hood cable is on the right side of the main wiring harness. And my '48 throttle cable is on the upper left side, the oil pressure pipe is on the upper right side and the temp is on the bottom in the middle. These are looking at the firewall from the front.

Thanks. I guess the key for the grommet with the temp/oil/throttle lines is to kind of get them lined up in the direction they need to go. Will see how that works out.

hey everyone....I'm new to this internet stuff! Not sure where to go to post a message

HELP!

What I am looking for is a radiator for my 1947 Chevy P/U truck--- I have been told it is not fixable except maybe a new core might work. I don't even know if I could buy a new radiator for it. Can anyone help me ---all info much appreciated and here's hoping I can get back to the page you will be answering on.

thanks

Any good radiator shop should be able to put a new core in your radiator. Don't give up. Let your fingers do the walking.

Thanks so much that info---I'm hoping just putting a new core in it would be the thing to do. I live in a small town, Thomson, GA, and there isn't much to choose from here....I can always go to the big city of Augusta. Anyhow, sorry to post on your spot but became so aggravated about how to post, I just knew one of you guys could help me.
Please feel free to e-mail me at:

and again---thanks,

Yes, I have purchased new grommets. For the 3-hole grommet, Chevs of the 40s is the only source I've found for it. It's in their current catalog on Page 175, part number 3653785. I couldn't find it in either The Filling Station Catalog or the Steele Rubber Products Catalog. I like the quality of the Steele parts, but guess they don't stock this. The Chev's of the 40s part is not the cleanest copy, but you don't see very much of it once installed and it will look just fine.

Thanks
I guess I didn't look hard enough. Need to get a catalog as it is easier than the online sometimes.

Agree! Somehow it just seems so much more efficient to flip through pages of a paper catalog than trying to search online. Guess I'll get used to it someday. Try this link for the grommet:

http://www.chevsofthe40s.com/shop/search.lasso?Group=Interior&Dept=Car&Cat=310C

Hopefully that will get you to the right page in their online catalog. It's under Interior, Firewall Grommets.

Hello Dale.

Not to confuse the issue, but my 48, looking at firewall from front of car, the 3 hole grommet has the throttle cable on upper right, water temp upper left, and oil pressure in lower middle hole. This, to me, shows that the 2 upper holes carry the upper part of eng and lower hole carries the lower part of engine as you suggested.

My hood release cable is just to the right and a bit lower than the main wiring harness.

Thanks again for the info.
Did you have your dash out?
Wondering what to use under the dash where it attaches to the body.

Jim - Thanks for the info on how your lines are routed. I still haven't installed the 3 lines through the grommet yet, so I appreciate the info.

Keith - I ended up not putting anything between the dash and the body. I think there was some kind of thin cushioning black material originally, but I just bolted the dash on. Hopefully, it won't be squeaking or causing any issues.
